Tesla sales in Europe fall despite electric car market recovery

Tesla appears to have missed its electric vehicle (EV) sales target in Europe for May 2025, as CEO Elon Musk's political activities are said to continue to turn customers away from the automaker.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), in May 2025, Tesla sold 40.2% fewer cars than in the same period last year in the European market.

This is in contrast to the general trend when total battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe jumped 25% in the same month.

During the period from January to May 2025, Tesla's car sales dropped 45.2% compared to the same period last year.

One of the reasons cited is that European consumers are increasingly unhappy with Mr Musk's close relationship with US President Donald Trump.

In addition, European consumers now have more battery-powered electric vehicle options, including competing models from Chinese manufacturers. As a result, Tesla’s share of the total European car market has fallen to 1.1%, from 2% in 2024.

Tesla's sales decline comes as overall electric vehicle sales in Europe have rebounded strongly, increasing 26.1% in January-May 2025 and accounting for 15.4% of total vehicle sales.

However, according to Ms. Sigrid de Vries, Director of ACEA, this is a market share that is still far from the necessary and expected level.

The European Union (EU) aims to end the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. However, the high cost of electric vehicles and concerns about the lack of charging infrastructure are still holding consumers back.

Car sales in Europe increased by 1.6% in May 2025, but overall from January to May 2025 decreased by 0.6%./.
