The atmosphere was joyful after the Chairman of the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee officially knocked the hammer to recognize the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscape Complex as a World Cultural Heritage.
This is the 9th World Heritage Site in Vietnam recognized by UNESCO and the 2nd inter-provincial World Heritage Site in Vietnam, along with the World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago (in Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city).
Joining the Vietnamese delegation attending the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee (UNESCO) taking place from July 6-16 in Paris (France), Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Dr.-Architect Hoang Dao Cuong affirmed: This is the pride not only of the people of Quang Ninh, Bac Giang , Hai Phong provinces but also of the entire people of the country.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay congratulated the Vietnamese delegation.
This recognition is a clear demonstration of Vietnam's efforts in preserving and maintaining relics in recent times, and is also an initial success that encourages and motivates Vietnam to continue to commit more to preserving and promoting heritage values.
Vice Chairwoman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Hanh reiterated Quang Ninh's leading role in building the dossier since 2020 and said that Quang Ninh province will continue to preside with Hai Phong and Bac Ninh to build a project to preserve, restore and promote the value of the priceless heritage, in order to be worthy of the noble title of UNESCO and preserve the heritage forever for future generations.
The inscription of this heritage is the result of closely following and implementing the direction of the Party and State leaders, General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Deputy Prime Ministers, the close and effective coordination between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, especially the continuous efforts and high determination of the authorities and people of the localities of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and Bac Ninh.
From a diplomatic perspective, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu said that this is the result of more than 13 years of preparation, with close direction from Party and State leaders at all levels, close coordination from relevant ministries and branches, and efforts from localities including Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong.
This is also another contribution of Vietnam to the goal of preserving and promoting heritage values that UNESCO is promoting. Honor and pride always go hand in hand with responsibility, requiring all levels, sectors and localities to raise awareness and synchronously deploy practical and effective measures to preserve and promote heritage values in accordance with the spirit of the World Heritage Convention associated with sustainable development.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu also highlighted the value of the Truc Lam Zen sect founded by Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong in the 13th century, with its values of "peace, harmony, reconciliation and worldly thinking", which are values that are completely consistent with the principles, purposes and common actions of UNESCO.
Stemming from the desire to better protect and promote cultural heritage, spread the good values of peace, harmony, and reconciliation - the main ideology of Truc Lam Buddhism, especially in the context of the current world crisis, the Vietnamese delegation at the meeting conducted dozens of meetings and contacts with the Head of Delegation, Ambassadors, and experts of 20 member countries of the World Heritage Committee, the Director of the World Heritage Center, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) to update, explain information, clarify outstanding global values, and strongly commit to implementing ICOMOS recommendations on heritage conservation.
In particular, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a letter to the Director General of UNESCO and 20 members of the World Heritage Committee requesting support for the nomination dossier of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscape Complex, affirming Vietnam's strong commitment to heritage management and protection, which was highly appreciated by the members. On that basis, the Session reached absolute consensus, all members supported the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscape Complex as worthy of being listed as a world cultural heritage.
Sharing with Nhan Dan Newspaper reporters, Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet, Vice President of the Central Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, abbot of Yen Tu Pagoda, expressed his determination to work with relevant agencies and local authorities to gradually preserve and promote Yen Tu, Vinh Nghiem, Con Son, and Kiep Bac in accordance with the common aspirations of the Vietnamese people and humanity, including the United Nations agency UNESCO.
Not only is it the pride of Vietnam, the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son - Kiep Bac relic and scenic complex is also highly appreciated internationally.
Bulgarian Professor Nikolay Nenov, Chairman of the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee (UNESCO), emphasized: This complex of monuments and landscapes is very important to all of us and to all of humanity.
Sending his congratulations to the delegation, Mr. Nikolay Nenov also emphasized that Vietnam needs to take advantage of all favorable conditions from this registration, to continue to have more effective plans and actions in the work of preserving heritage for humanity.
Ambassador, Head of the Permanent Mission of India to UNESCO Vishal Sharma said that the newly inscribed Complex of Monuments and Landscapes has important significance for the country and people of Vietnam.
The Ambassador affirmed: “India has always supported Vietnam and decided to submit the revised version for the recognition of the Complex of Monuments. There are still many questions related to the impact assessment reports, but this historical relic still completely meets all the conditions. Therefore, India feels that the recognition of the World Heritage Committee for the Complex of Monuments and Landscapes of Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac is very correct.”
In the coming time, Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu stated that Vietnam, together with ministries, sectors and localities, will preserve heritage and seriously implement the resolutions and commitments that have been made.
The goal is not only to preserve the objects, but also to strengthen and spread the noble values of Truc Lam Zen, the thoughts of Buddha Emperor Tran Nhan Tong on peace, reconciliation, love and engagement in the world, contributing to the common development of the community and the harmony between humans and nature.
The Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem, Con Son, and Kiep Bac relic and scenic complex recognized as a World Cultural Heritage is not only a title, but also an affirmation of the unique value of Vietnamese culture, history, and spirituality.
At the same time, this is also a reminder of the sacred responsibility to preserve and promote these priceless values for future generations and for all humanity.
The UNESCO-recognized World Heritage sites in Vietnam have been making important contributions to the local socio-economic development, environmental protection, green and sustainable growth, and thereby promoting Vietnamese culture, country and people to the world and enriching the world's cultural treasures. This contribution also demonstrates Vietnam's commitment and responsibility in protecting world heritage sites not only in Vietnam but also in the Southeast Asian region, preserving them for the present and passing them on to future generations. Vietnam, as a member of the World Heritage Committee for the 2023-2027 term, is also making more active contributions to the implementation of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
