Sustainable solutions for "thirsty" lands
Song Than Reservoir (located in Anh Dung commune) is one of the important irrigation works to solve the problem of water shortage in the southern irrigation area of the province. Song Than Reservoir Project was implemented since 2018 with a design capacity of 85.04 million m³. This is a Group B project, a grade II agricultural and rural development project, undertaking many important tasks: Providing irrigation water for 4,500 hectares of cultivated land, providing domestic water for about 20,000 people in the downstream area, supplementing water for other reservoirs such as: Lanh Ra, Ta Ranh, Bau Zon and flood control for the downstream area. In addition, the lake also combines benefits in terms of transportation, aquaculture and creating a tourist landscape.

The main items of the project include: a 304m long left branch gravity concrete dam (39m high) and a 1,029m long right branch earth dam (33m high). The modern hydraulic system also has a spillway, a gate with 3 valves, with a large designed flood discharge, and a 30m wide free spillway. The water source is led through a culvert and a 758.3m long lake channel. In addition, the project also invests in a synchronous management and operation building, a main management road system, a lake flood avoidance road longer than 2.3km, an electrical system and a construction monitoring system.
The project implementation process encountered many difficulties, especially in site clearance and land use conversion. The project had to convert 431.76 hectares of forest land, including 112.21 hectares of protective forest land approved by the Prime Minister . The local government also approved the settlement of compensation and site clearance support costs of more than 342.3 billion VND, ensuring the rights of affected people.
Up to now, the project has basically completed the construction and installation of all main and auxiliary items. The bidding packages for earth dam, concrete dam, spillway system, water intake, deep discharge, auxiliary dam, reservoir channel, management road and management house have all been completed. The load test of the sluice gates has been successfully carried out.
Open up new prospects
Amid the peak of summer heat, the Song Than reservoir has brought encouraging signs when it officially started storing water. Thanks to the "precious as gold" unseasonal rains, the reservoir has now received more than 4.5 million m3 of water. In order to put the project into official operation soon, relevant departments, branches, units and the project investor are conducting inspections, completing documents and preparing for comprehensive acceptance and handover. The regulatory operation process and emergency response plan have also been approved by the Provincial People's Committee, ensuring maximum safety for the project as soon as it officially comes into operation.

Once put into operation, the Song Than reservoir not only provides a stable water source for agriculture, helping thousands of hectares of cultivated land escape abandonment due to lack of water, but also ensures domestic water for the community, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, improving people's lives and improving the ecological environment in the region. Mr. Nguyen Quoc Truong (Tan Hoa village, Anh Dung commune), who has more than 1.5 hectares of cassava land - the only source of income for his family, once faced with many crops of abandoned land due to prolonged drought, now happily shares: "We have been waiting for the project to be completed and put into use soon. I am very happy that the Song Than reservoir has stored water, initially bringing water to the downstream area to serve stable production for people in the region. With water, people can expand their acreage, switch to crops with high economic efficiency without worrying about unstable production depending on rainwater".
Currently, in parallel with the water storage, the handover, operation and connection of related items are being accelerated. The plan to connect the canal network and the interconnection system between large reservoirs in the region is also being promoted. Mr. Le Xuan Toan, Deputy Director of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board , said: "The Management Board is accelerating the progress of the main canal combined with the interconnection to bring water to Lanh Ra Lake, striving to start construction in the third quarter and complete in 2025".
With efforts to overcome difficulties, careful preparation and strategic importance in water supply, Song Than reservoir promises to open up a green and prosperous future for the southern region of the province, especially in drought prevention and climate change adaptation.
