With an average increase of about 2,500 MW/year according to Power Plan VIII, the energy industry is facing a series of challenges, such as medium-term supply shortage, locally overloaded transmission grid, LNG power development mechanism with many bottlenecks, offshore wind power development is still in the foundation stage...
Faced with these urgent requirements, Petrovietnam not only focuses on gas and offshore wind power but also implements a series of initiatives to reduce emissions and promote green transformation throughout the entire value chain at its member units.
At Dung Quat Oil Refinery, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) has implemented dozens of technical solutions to improve energy efficiency, helping to save nearly 10 million USD/year. Notably, BSR has researched and started trial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) - one of the pioneering steps in the Net Zero roadmap of the Vietnamese oil and gas processing industry.
In the field of power generation, PV Power is promoting investment in many new renewable energy projects; such as reservoir solar power, wind power, waste-to-energy and small hydropower, developing new energy products such as storage batteries, hydrogen... to anticipate the global energy transition trend. In addition, PV Power's existing power plants are installed with rooftop solar power systems to serve internal consumption, gradually transforming operations towards greening.
From a system perspective, the gas-fired power and renewable energy projects implemented by Petrovietnam have been adding significant new capacity to the national power system; directly contributing to solving the problem of supply capacity shortage. At the same time, the arrangement of projects in the South, Southwest, and North Central regions helps reduce pressure on the North-South transmission system, which is currently overloaded locally, especially during the peak of the dry season.
Notably, Petrovietnam implements most of its major projects with its own capital, without using government guarantees. This affirms the Group's financial capacity, project management as well as its initiative in implementing the national energy development strategy. Petrovietnam also promotes international cooperation with leading corporations such as Aramco, ADNOC, TotalEnergies... in the fields of LNG, CCS/CCUS and offshore wind power, expanding the space for cooperation, attracting investment and accessing advanced technology.
In the context of energy transition becoming a mandatory and urgent requirement, Petrovietnam not only plays a key role in ensuring energy security, but also pioneers in shaping a new energy ecosystem, contributing to solving the problem of increasing the country's electricity by 2,500 MW/year; at the same time, laying the foundation for a low-emission, energy-self-sufficient and globally competitive economy in the near future.
