Doan Ket village is located quite close to forests and streams. While going to the forest, many people noticed the rù rì tree (locals call it rì rì tree) - a type of bush that grows wild in streams, mountains and hills, has beautiful green foliage and is suitable for planting to create public landscapes.
Head of Doan Ket village, Hoang Ngoc Man, said that after the commune launched the movement to build new rural areas, in 2018, officials and people in the village discussed and agreed to choose ru ri trees from the forest to plant experimentally along the central road of the village.
“This is a common tree that grows in streams and hills that we often encounter when we go to the forest. This tree has small, hard leaves, a thick canopy, a small trunk, rarely sheds its leaves, and blooms white flowers on the top from around July to September every year, which is very beautiful. The flowers last for more than a month before fading. Rù rì is a tree that is no more than 3 meters tall, easy to grow and care for, and does not require much fertilizer,” Mr. Man described.
Now, walking along the two rows of rustling trees on the roadside in Doan Ket village, planted 7 years ago, the trees are lush green with regular sizes, neatly trimmed, many people cannot help but be surprised by the poetic and strange scenery.
“Most other places choose familiar, popular flowers and leaves to plant to decorate the new countryside. In our village, we chose to plant the rù rì tree to create a new, outstanding landscape. And really, after many years of planting and caring, we now have a row of more than 100 rù rì trees planted along a 500-meter long road, very beautiful, with distinct characteristics,” Mr. Man added.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Phuoc, 54 years old, was one of the people who actively participated in planting rù rì trees to beautify the landscape of Doan Ket village when the village launched the campaign. At that time, Mr. Phuoc and everyone in the village traveled many kilometers of forest roads into streams to dig up young trees to plant.
“We planted young rù rì trees about 40-50cm high in old car tires along both sides of the village’s central road. These trees do not need much fertilizer, and we take care of them so that they grow evenly. Up to now, these trees have bloomed several seasons of pure white flowers, very beautiful,” said Mr. Phước.
Putting his hand on a tree that is sprouting new leaves and starting to flower, Mr. Phuoc added that in recent years, the flower season has attracted a lot of locals and even strangers passing by to take souvenir photos.
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Huong, a Doan Ket resident, happily shared that when the village launched the rù rì tree planting campaign, he also contributed his labor to help everyone dig up the trees to plant. “We planted rù rì trees at a distance of 10 meters/tree, but now looking back, the trees are still a bit sparse. In the future, if we continue to plant, we will adjust the distance to only about 5 meters/tree, the rows of trees will be thicker and more beautiful,” Mr. Huong said.
To help maintain the beauty of the trees, Doan Ket Village Chief Hoang Ngoc Man said that recently he has assigned a person in the village to regularly take charge of caring for and trimming the tree canopy.
"Doan Ket village has reached the advanced new rural area goal in 2024 and is currently continuing to build a model new rural area at level 2. Planting this "unique and strange" row of rhubarb trees is also one of the highlights of rural beautification that is highly appreciated, supported and actively responded to by the local government and people.
In Doan Ket village, the rù rì trees are not only planted in the central part of the village but many households also plant them in their gardens and then prune them to create beautiful ornamental trees with economic value. In the near future, we plan to plant more rù rì trees as public landscapes in some locations in the village. We also hope that this type of tree will create a unique highlight in the landscape for the new rural village of Doan Ket village in the future", Mr. Man shared more.
