Locality has "super" school
According to data released by the Departments of Education and Training at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, before the merger, Ho Chi Minh City had more than 1.7 million students. Meanwhile, Binh Duong province had about 520,700 students; Ba Ria - Vung Tau province had about 300,000 students. Thus, after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has about 2.6 million students, the most in the country.
Also according to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, before the merger, this locality had 2,341 schools, including 1,308 kindergartens, 529 primary schools, 299 secondary schools, and 205 high schools.
Binh Duong province previously had 713 schools of all levels, including 375 public schools and 338 non-public schools. Ba Ria - Vung Tau province had 463 schools, including 195 kindergartens, 139 primary schools, 91 secondary schools and 38 high schools.
Thus, after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has a scale of about 3,500 schools from kindergarten to high school.
Similarly, according to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City (old) has 80,612 teachers. Of which, there are 26,889 preschool teachers; 23,155 primary school teachers, 18,125 secondary school teachers and 12,442 high school teachers.
Binh Duong province has about 16,000 teachers, including 14,883 people and 1,048 managers. Ba Ria - Vung Tau province previously had about more than 16,000 teachers at all levels. Thus, after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has more than 110,000 teachers.
To operate such a large-scaleeducation system, the Board of Directors of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City consists of 1 director and 9 Deputy directors.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu holds the position of Director of the Department. Deputy Directors include: Mr. Duong Tri Dung, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Ms. Le Thuy My Chau, Ms. Huynh Le Nhu Trang, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhat Hang, Mr. Nguyen Van Phong, Ms. Truong Hai Thanh, Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Chau and Mr. Nguyen Ke Toai.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is located at 66-68 Le Thanh Ton, Saigon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
The organizational structure includes functional departments: Office, Inspection - Legal Department (merging with Inspection and adding legal functions), Personnel Organization Department, Planning - Finance Department, Student Department (renamed from Political - Ideological Department), Quality Management Department (from Examination and Quality Control Department), and other specialized departments such as Preschool Education, General Education, Continuing Education - Vocational and University, Management of non-public educational institutions.

Efforts to create a friendly and safe learning environment
At the first meeting with officials, civil servants, and employees of the agency after the merger in early July, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that the construction of classrooms and investment in facilities are the continuous and regular responsibility of the Ho Chi Minh City education sector. No field of study is separate from the goals of innovation and digital transformation.
In addition, this locality not only focuses on expertise with teaching towards developing students' abilities and qualities, but the Ho Chi Minh City education sector will also promote activities to help students practice skills, physical strength, develop talents, etc., creating a friendly and safe school environment.
Mr. Hieu especially emphasized: "HCMC encourages every secondary student to know how to play at least one sport and one musical instrument. Swimming will continue to be popularized throughout the city. The Student Affairs Department will continue to implement the Happy School model. As for schools, if possible, they will organize cooking classes for students to practice their self-service skills."
The leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City also require each specialist of the department to develop a personal plan according to the area of responsibility for the department and division leaders to approve in advance. By the end of July, the Department's Board of Directors will approve the action plan of each department and division.
"To improve the quality of education, it is not only necessary to invest in facilities but also to train teachers. Especially teachers who teach new subjects according to the 2018 General Education Program such as: Natural Sciences, History - Geography... Teaching must be based on the requirements of the program to avoid putting pressure on students," said Mr. Understand.
The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City currently manages 198 public service units, including 165 general schools, 2 specialized high schools, 2 schools for gifted students in physical education and sports, 1 special general school, 2 schools for disabled children, 3 affiliated kindergartens, 6 secondary schools, 10 continuing education centers, and many centers supporting special education, foreign languages, information technology and information centers.
