USDA warns of global coffee surplus of more than 9 million bags next season

The latest report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that global coffee production in the 2024-2025 crop year will reach about 174.4 million bags, up 2.98% compared to the previous crop year. In particular, in the 2025-2026 crop year, when Brazil enters a favorable cycle and begins to supply more goods to the market, global production is estimated to reach 178.68 million bags, up 2.45% compared to the 2023-2024 crop year.

In Brazil, USDA forecasts current crop production at around 65 million bags, including 41 million bags of Arabica and 24 million bags of Robusta. Indonesia is also expected to increase production to 11.25 million bags, up 2% from the previous crop. Meanwhile, Vietnam's coffee output, expected to be harvested from October 2025, is estimated at around 31 million bags, up 6.9% from the 2023-2024 crop.

It is worth noting that the USDA forecasts that global coffee consumption in the next crop year will only reach about 169.36 million bags, much lower than output, creating a risk of oversupply of more than 9 million bags in the market.

In the international market, coffee prices last week had mixed developments: Robusta increased slightly while Arabica decreased sharply. Specifically, the price of Robusta coffee futures for September 2025 on the London exchange ended the week at $3,677/ton, up 0.4% ($16/ton) compared to the previous week. The November 2025 futures contract also increased 0.7% ($24/ton), to $3,617/ton.

In contrast, on the New York floor, the price of Arabica coffee futures for September 2025 fell sharply by 4.7% (14.2 US cents/pound), to 289.6 US cents/pound; the November 2025 contract fell by 4.5% (13.3 US cents/pound), to 284.15 US cents/pound.

In the domestic market of Vietnam, coffee prices have recovered slightly this week thanks to low inventories. However, the increase is still limited due to the pressure of increased supply from other producing countries, affecting trading activities.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the amount of coffee in stock in farmers' households is currently only about 10-15%, most of which was sold at the previous high price.

A trader in the coffee growing area said the market remained quite quiet as participants were very cautious in trading.

Robusta coffee grade 2, with a 5% black and broken ratio, is offered at a premium of 70-80 USD/ton compared to the September futures contract on the LIFFE exchange.

Strong coffee supplies from Indonesia and Brazil continue to put downward pressure on prices. In Indonesia, data from the local trade office shows that robusta coffee exports from Sumatra in May reached 34,056.2 tons, up 137% from the previous month.

Sumatran coffee was offered at a premium of $250 a tonne to the September-October contract this week, down from a premium of $330 last week, one trader said, citing an adjustment to the London floor. Another trader quoted a premium of $200 a tonne to the September contract.

In Brazil, the world's largest coffee cooperative Cooxupé said that as of June 27, its members had harvested 31.4% of the new crop of arabica coffee, down from 42.3% at the same time last year, indicating slower progress this year.

In total, Cooxupé has so far harvested about 1.92 million bags out of the 6.1 million bags expected to be received from the new crop.
