The journey to keep the passion for the profession alive in the highlands

More than 20 years ago, when Dinh Hoa High School, Thai Nguyen province, was still lacking in facilities, many teachers from the lowlands volunteered to work there. They accepted to be far from their hometowns and families to accompany students in the highlands.

Due to difficult living conditions, teachers have to stay in the school's public housing area - closed level 4 houses built in 2004 and 2006. After more than 16 years of use, the two houses have seriously degraded: the corrugated iron roofs are rotten, the walls are peeling, the floors are damp and moldy, not ensuring safety for living.

Faced with this situation, in 2022, the school consulted with the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training to call for socialized resources. With a total budget of 2.4 billion VND, the project to renovate two rows of public housing was completed, providing a safe and spacious living space for 23 staff and teachers living in the dormitory.

Ms. Nong Thi Hao - Principal of Dinh Hoa High School shared: "Renovating the official residence not only helps improve living conditions but also creates peace of mind and motivation for teachers to focus on their work, especially for those in difficult circumstances and living far away."

The renovated public housing area has been supplemented with a playground for teachers' children and a small garden to increase production. These small amenities help to warm up the camaraderie among colleagues and help teachers feel attached to the school as a second home.

In An Khanh commune, Thai Nguyen province, the situation of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Song, a teacher of 3-year-old kindergarten class B, An Khanh Kindergarten also moved many people.

After more than 20 years working in theeducation sector, her husband died of a serious illness, leaving Ms. Song as the sole breadwinner for her two children. Her family had just escaped poverty, while their only income came from her teacher's salary.

Understanding that situation, at the end of 2023, the Thai Nguyen Provincial Federation of Labor (FFL) coordinated with the Dai Tu District Federation of Labor and Thai Nguyen Electricity Company (PC Thai Nguyen) to support Ms. Song in building a "Union Shelter" worth 30 million VND. Together with the contributions of family, friends, colleagues and mass organizations, after nearly 5 months of construction, the spacious level 4 house with an area of nearly 100m² was completed.

"I am truly touched and grateful to receive attention from all levels and sectors. From now on, my children and I no longer have to worry about heavy rain and strong winds. The new home gives me more motivation to overcome difficulties and continue to stick with my career," Ms. Song shared, choking with emotion.

Spread love, support the teaching profession

Binh Trung Secondary and High School, Nghia Ta Commune, Thai Nguyen Province is also a bright spot in the work of supporting public housing for teachers in remote areas. The school was established in 2006, many teachers have to live in a dilapidated wooden house with serious termites.

In response to the urgent need for accommodation for staff and teachers, in 2023, the Trade Union of Universities supports the construction of a three-room house for 9 teachers. Then, in November 2024, Bac Kan Provincial Police continued to support 2 public housing houses with 16 rooms (each room is 21.4m², fully equipped with living room, bedroom, heat-resistant ceiling and emergency exit), along with a communal kitchen and a private restroom.

After just over 13 days of construction, the entire project worth 1.1 billion VND was completed and put into use. The spacious rooms replacing the old wooden house have brought joy and peace of mind to the teachers who are attached to the school and class.

Mr. Vu Duc Man - Principal of the school emotionally shared: "The support of agencies and units not only helps the school solve difficulties in facilities but also shows practical concerns for the teaching staff in remote areas. This is a great motivation for teachers to continue to contribute to the cause of education."

Union shelters and public housing areas are not only places to live, but also symbols of the care and sharing of the whole society for the teaching staff - those who are silently dedicating themselves to the future generation. In difficult areas, the synchronous participation of authorities at all levels, the education sector, trade unions and businesses have created a practical and sustainable support network.
