The weather is currently at the peak of the rainy season, and the work of preventing and combating natural disasters, protecting infrastructure, and ensuring production and business activities in the city requires the focus of relevant departments, local authorities, businesses, and people.

According to the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station, due to the influence of storm No. 2 Appearing in the northeastern sea area of ​​the North East Sea, in the past few days, the weather in Can Tho City has been cloudy to cloudy, sunny during the day, with rain in the afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms, concentrated in the central area of ​​Can Tho City and the southeast of the city. In the coming days, the storm will move in the West-Northwest direction at a speed of 10-15km/h and gradually weaken into a low pressure area, so it is necessary to be on guard against thunderstorms that affect people's lives and production. The sea area from Lam Dong to Ca Mau (including the sea area of ​​Can Tho City) has scattered showers and thunderstorms. Strong southwest wind level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting to level 7, waves from 2-4m high, rough seas, it is necessary to strictly manage fishing vessels going out to sea...

Beware of storms that can cause trees to fall, posing a danger to passersby.

At the end of June 2025, due to the influence of low pressure in the East Sea, Can Tho City (old) also experienced thunderstorms, with common rainfall of 5-10mm, locally over 15mm in some places. The rain was accompanied by thunderstorms, causing trees to fall, damaging signs and houses of local residents. In particular, thunderstorms caused many trees to fall on Nguyen Thai Hoc, Phan Dinh Phung, Le Hong Phong streets... causing danger and affecting traffic safety. Mr. Nguyen Van Quoc, in Ninh Kieu ward, Can Tho city, said: "This year, the weather is complicated, thunderstorms appear more often than in previous years. Especially heavy rains often cause flooding on the streets, affecting traffic and people's lives. Thunderstorms also cause trees to fall on the streets. Therefore, when it rains heavily and storms appear, people should limit going out to avoid possible dangers."

According to the Office of the Steering Committee for Civil Defense - Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue (PTDS-PCTT&TKCN) of Can Tho City, the current natural disaster situation in Can Tho City is becoming increasingly complicated. As of the end of June 2025, Can Tho City (old) has experienced 3 types of natural disasters: riverbank landslides, heavy rains accompanied by storms and storms, and high tides. Natural disasters did not cause human casualties, but property damage was nearly 2.5 billion VND.

specifically, riverbank landslides occurred 7 times, with a total length of 188m, completely destroyed 5 houses (4 residential houses and 1 rice paper factory), 1 house was affected and collapsed, 2 medium voltage power poles fell into the river, affecting 4 traffic routes, estimated property damage of over 1.8 billion VND. Heavy rains accompanied by storms occurred 8 times in the area (according to the old districts): Binh Thuy, Thot Not, Thoi Lai, Vinh Thanh, Co Do, causing 2 houses to collapse (1 residential house and 1 greenhouse growing melons), blowing off the roofs of 16 houses, estimated property damage of about 569 million VND.

In early February 2025, a high tide caused urban flooding, affecting the daily life and travel of people in the center of Can Tho City... After the natural disaster occurred, the functional sectors of Can Tho City and local authorities promptly mobilized forces to support people to overcome the consequences and stabilize their lives.

Prevention

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting forecasts: Total rainfall in the 2025 rainy season will be 5-15% higher than the average of many years. In July and August, the total monthly rainfall will be 300-400mm (5-10% higher than the average). The period of reduced rainfall in the rainy season is likely to be around the first half of September 2025. Localities should pay attention to prevent rain, strong thunderstorms with whirlwinds and lightning after periods of reduced rainfall in the middle of the rainy season.

Regarding high tides, in August 2025, the water level will gradually rise, the peak high tides in September, October, November and December will be above the alarm level III (2m) in the center of Can Tho City. The highest water level in 2025 is likely to be at 2.2-2.3m (exceeding alarm level III by 0.2-0.3m). On the Hau River in the center of Can Tho City, the highest tide of the year is likely to appear near the end of October and mid-November 2025, to prevent urban flooding, affecting people's lives and production.

To limit damage caused by natural disasters, the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Can Tho City requests relevant departments, agencies and localities to focus on responding to the risks of heavy rain, storms, landslides and proactively prevent and fight natural disasters in the coming time. Continue to implement Directive No. 02/CT-BNNMT dated May 8, 2025 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on strengthening the work of ensuring the safety of dykes and irrigation works during the rainy and flood season in 2025; ensure the direction and operation of natural disaster prevention, control and search and rescue in communes, wards and towns; strictly maintain the on-call regime, proactively inspect, review and adjust plans and strategies to respond to natural disasters and search and rescue incidents. Mobilize forces and means to promptly and effectively respond to and overcome situations that arise. Implement specific measures to prevent, combat and overcome the consequences of natural disasters (due to landslides, high tides, heavy rains, thunderstorms, tropical depressions, storms) in accordance with the developments and situations of natural disasters; prevent human casualties, minimize the risk of property damage to people and the State...

The Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Can Tho City requests that heads of agencies and units, according to their assigned functions, tasks and authority, urgently review and develop plans to reorganize forces performing tasks of natural disaster prevention, control, search and rescue at all levels, following the instructions of competent authorities, and at the same time, in accordance with the actual conditions of each agency, unit and locality to ensure smooth, effective and efficient operations, especially after July 1, 2025. Agencies and units must absolutely not be negligent, subjective, lose vigilance, and not allow interruptions in directing response to natural disasters when reorganizing administrative units and organizing local government at 2 levels...
