The temporary hut of Mrs. Lo Thi Thiet's family by the stream - home to 7 people.
In the past few rainy days, 5 households in Am Hieu village, Co Lung commune had to evacuate due to the landslide on Vang Ta Pong mountain that occurred on August 3, 2024, making them even more worried. They did not dare to return to their old house because the landslide showed signs of continuing, and they did not have a new place to live.
Standing next to a makeshift hut of about 10 square meters , Ms. Lo Thi Thiet (66 years old) said: “My family of 3 generations with 7 members has been living in this temporary hut for the whole year. In the past few days, the rain has leaked and the Nam Khen stream has risen and flowed rapidly. Worried about the safety of the children, the whole family had to stay with households living on higher ground. The family is looking forward to each day to move to a new, safe place to live.”
The rain caused the stream water to rise and flow rapidly, posing a high risk of safety, especially for young children.
Mrs. Thiet also shared that although the family's economy is difficult, depending mainly on her son's income as a construction worker, if they are given resettlement land, the family will try to borrow money to build a small stilt house soon, so that the adults can work with peace of mind and the children have a place to study.
It is known that in addition to the 5 households affected by the above landslide, the former Co Lung commune (now merged with Lung Cao commune) also has 18 households in the landslide-prone area that have applied for resettlement. However, for nearly a year, although the resettlement site has been identified in Am Hieu village, due to some problems with planning and funding, it has not been able to be implemented.
On the first working day of the new commune-level government, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Co Lung Commune, Nguyen Co Thach, came to check on the living conditions and encourage households temporarily living along the stream. Mr. Thach said: “In the immediate future, the commune will send forces to support people in reinforcing temporary accommodation, ensuring security and order, safety of life and property; at the same time, consider the option of moving people to temporary accommodation at the commune police headquarters and commune office. The general spirit is to ensure basic living conditions for people and support necessary conditions such as means, books, and school supplies for children to prepare for the new school year. Along with that, the commune will coordinate with the functional branches of the province to remove obstacles and soon build resettlement areas for people. The Commune's Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command Committee in its first meeting (July 3) will also identify key areas with high risks of insecurity to develop response plans, ensuring synchronous operations according to the "4 on-site" motto. |
