Inheriting a love of Japanese culture from his family, especially from his father - Dr. Truong Quang Duc, who graduated from Tohoku University (Japan), Quang Viet soon revealed his passion for Japanese. Due to not having the opportunity to study Japanese formally, the male student chose to self-study through videos on YouTube.
Japanese is considered one of the most difficult languages, especially due to its complex Kanji system, which requires a long time to memorize, but for the boy born in 2009, Kanji is a passion. “I feel that each character is a meaningful pictogram and creates logical thinking. Learning Kanji helps me discover more historical and cultural values of Japan,” Viet shared.
To pursue this language science, Viet built a specific study plan and strictly disciplined himself, persistently completing his homework every day. "The first stage of learning is very difficult, but when you accumulate a certain vocabulary, everything becomes easier. The important thing is to persevere in self-studying every day," Viet said.
During the learning and review process, the male student chose specialized JLPT test preparation books such as Shinkanzen, Somatome and Minna no Nihongo, studying according to the topics of the N4 and N3 levels. Viet said that the Japanese language exam for the Foreign Language Specialized High School this year was equivalent to the N3 level, with many highly classified reading comprehension and fill-in-the-blank questions and a 3-point essay.
In the essay section with the requirement to write about extracurricular activities, Viet shared about memorable experiences at Doan Thi Diem Secondary School where he had the opportunity to develop his passion for science and sports, instead of just focusing on studying books. As a result, Viet scored 7.86 points in Japanese and received a notice of admission to the Foreign Language Specialized High School (Hanoi National University) with a total score of 34.72, exceeding the standard score of 30.5.
Regarding the Japanese language exam of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Viet assessed the difficulty level as lower, only equivalent to the N4 JLPT level. The exam had good differentiation, combining both easy and difficult questions to comprehensively assess students' abilities. The 1-point essay required writing about "an indispensable thing in life", Viet chose the topic of "lifelong learning" - the key to self-development. The male student scored 8.40 points in the Japanese language exam.
With a total score of 43.55, Viet was excellently admitted to Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, far exceeding the standard score of 38.65.
Ms. Vuong Hue, homeroom teacher of class 9TA3 Math and English, commented that Quang Viet is a gentle, friendly student who always strives to improve. In the first years of middle school, Viet encountered many difficulties in expressing and writing Vietnamese because he had lived in Japan with his family.
However, the male student made remarkable progress each school year. Especially in grade 9, through each mock exam, Viet's scores continuously improved, always in the top 5, even top 3 of the class.

"The teacher and student still tease each other, they are not easy to deal with! Indeed, with the ability to self-study, clear goals, determination and effort, Quang Viet achieved impressive specialized subject scores that far exceeded the teachers' expectations and finished brilliantly with tickets to 2 prestigious specialized schools in Hanoi," Ms. Hue shared.
Ms. Le Hang, Viet's mother, said that her son is meticulous and likes to learn about issues in depth and thoroughly. "He is very disciplined in both practice and study. Once, the whole family had to cancel a trip so that Viet could attend an unexpected online class," Ms. Hang said.

In his free time, Quang Viet loves reading books about technology with the hope of becoming a talented engineer in the future. The male student plans to enroll in Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, which has many Chemistry, Physics, and Robotics clubs.
"I look forward to going to school so I can join science and technology clubs, improve my knowledge and participate in competitions like ViSEF and iSEF. In the future, I want to learn about technologies that have a great impact on people's lives," Viet shared.
