Samsung acquires Xealth, Galaxy watch is about to connect directly to doctors?

From the wrist to the hospital, Samsung's upcoming wearables will offer a comprehensive healthcare solution as Samsung Electronics acquires US digital health company Xealth.

Samsung has announced the acquisition of Xealth, a US-based healthcare integration platform. Samsung did not disclose the financial value of the deal, but it is expected to close this year upon receiving regulatory approval.

Xealth, spun out of the US health system Providence in 2017, allows hospitals to manage digital health tools like e-prescribing and patient status tracking solutions on a single platform.

Xealth currently works with approximately 500 hospitals and more than 70 digital health solution partners, including large systems such as Advocate Health and Banner Health.

Samsung expects the deal to create a “synergy effect” between its AI-powered wearables and Xealth’s digital healthcare infrastructure. With the acquisition of Xealth, Samsung will help users monitor their health and proactively manage their personal health through devices such as the Galaxy smartphone, Galaxy Ring, and Galaxy Watch series.

Combining these devices with Xealth's infrastructure aims to deepen connectivity by linking real-time health data from users directly to healthcare providers.

“We believe that the acquisition of Xealth, with its accumulated expertise and extensive medical network, will be a solid foundation to accelerate Samsung’s efforts to support medical systems and digital healthcare partners, through a truly connected care model,” said TM Roh, President and Acting Head of the Device Experience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics.

Xealth CEO Michael McSherry also shared: “Samsung and Xealth are pursuing the vision of truly connected healthcare. Combining data from wearables with medical records will open up entirely new possibilities for digital health.”

Not stopping there, Samsung also plans to expand the digital health ecosystem by integrating home appliances to provide more personalized health care recommendations, such as adjusting the temperature and humidity in the home to suit health conditions.

Digital Healthcare – Samsung's New Growth Driver

Samsung aims to create a comprehensive healthcare platform where users can monitor health indicators at home, receive early warnings of disease risks, and connect directly to hospitals when needed. The acquisition of Xealth is a strategic move that will help Samsung bridge the gap between personal health and clinical care.

The South Korean company currently operates its own digital health platform called Samsung Health, which allows users to access health records collected from Samsung wearable devices, manage prescriptions and track daily food intake.

“Wearable health data can add context missing from hospital records, opening up the possibility of expanded data analytics that traditional clinical records cannot provide,” said Mike McSherry, CEO of Xealth.

This is Samsung's third non-semiconductor acquisition by 2025. Last May, the company bought FläktGroup (Germany), a manufacturer of HVAC systems, for 1.5 billion euros (nearly 1.8 billion USD).

Also this month, Samsung, through its subsidiary Harman International, acquired Masimo Corp's audio division for $350 million.

Amid increasingly fierce global competition, Samsung is repositioning itself as a multi-industry technology corporation, with digital healthcare as a strategic pillar for the near future.
