Musical “Cafe Banh Mi” spreads Vietnamese culture
The musical “Banh Mi Cafe” is a collaborative project between the Vietnam Drama Theater in collaboration with METAFORCE Vietnam Company and a team of Vietnamese and Korean artists. The original script of “Banh Mi Cafe” was written by Seo Sang Wan – a Korean author, with artist Le Trinh as the co-author; Director Cho Joon Hui in collaboration with director - People's Artist Hoang Lam Tung staged; Production Director Nguyen Thi Mai Quyen; Artistic Director: Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater, Meritorious Artist Kieu Minh Hieu.
The musical reflects the seething atmosphere of the days before the August Revolution of the Vietnamese people. The play has a realistic social context of Vietnam during the painful and famine-filled war years and praises the patriotic people, including the great contribution of the petty bourgeoisie who devoted not only money but also sacrificed their lives to join the resistance and the revolution. Despite facing countless difficulties and hardships, the Vietnamese people still maintained their faith in victory and refused to submit to any oppression from the enemy. The indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people in the August Revolution of 1945 is a beautiful expression of patriotism and solidarity, thereby gaining independence and freedom and affirming the indomitable will in the struggle for national liberation of the Vietnamese people.
According to Production Director Nguyen Thi Mai Quyen, “Cafe Banh Mi” is not only a musical, but also an emotional tribute to Vietnam on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the country’s founding. The play tells the story of the journey of the Vietnamese people through war, loss, and ultimately the desire for freedom and peace. In particular, the work was written by a Korean author with a delicate and humanistic perspective. With the collaboration between Vietnamese and Korean artists, the musical’s creative team hopes to bring to the public a play that is both artistically valuable and has profound social significance, while creating a “bridge” connecting art, history and audiences, not only in Vietnam but also reaching the regional level.
According to Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater Kieu Minh Hieu, the musical was performed by the crew of the Vietnam Drama Theater and METAFORCE Company, demonstrating the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Korea, aiming to spread messages about the culture, people and history of the two countries through images and stage language, thereby enhancing the relationship between the two countries in artistic exchange and cooperation, contributing to bringing to the public plays with good and truly meaningful messages.
“Both of these art projects will be performed in turn on the occasion of the 80th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - a major national holiday,” said Meritorious Artist Kieu Minh Hieu, Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater.
