Striker Viktor Gyokeres is set to join Arsenal. |
Speaking to France Football magazine, the Swedish striker frankly affirmed: "The playing style we applied under him is completely suitable for me."
During his two seasons with Sporting, Gyokeres not only demonstrated his fearsome scoring instincts but also became a key factor in helping the team win two consecutive national championships - something that had never happened in the club's 71-year history.
Joining Sporting from Coventry City in the summer of 2023, Gyokeres immediately made his mark by scoring 29 goals in Liga Portugal in his first season, playing a significant role in helping the team win the championship after nearly two decades of waiting. In the 2024/25 season, he was even more outstanding when he reached 39 goals, maintaining the top scorer position and helping Sporting successfully defend the title.
“It’s a really special achievement. And obviously Ruben Amorim has a huge part to play in all of it. I can’t thank him enough,” Gyokeres stressed.
However, the 27-year-old striker also revealed that he was shocked when coach Amorim decided to leave Sporting in the middle of the season - when the team was at the top of the table and still competing in the Champions League.
“It was a surprise. I have never seen a coach leave a team in the middle of a season when things were going so well. But I completely respect his decision. There is no resentment,” Gyokeres said.
Viktor Gyökeres' future is currently a hot topic in the transfer market. According to ESPN, Arsenal are very close to signing the Swedish striker for a fee of around €65 million. If the deal is successful, the Premier League will welcome one of the most dangerous goalscorers in Europe today.
