The export of durian continues to plummet, causing the entire fruit and vegetable industry to slow down. A report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that fruit and vegetable exports in June were estimated at 750 million USD, with the cumulative export value in the first 6 months of 2025 reaching over 3 billion USD, down 8.4% compared to the same period in 2024.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable products are mainly exported to the Chinese market with a proportion of 48.2% of total turnover, the US and South Korea with proportions of 9% and 5.7% respectively. However, the export value of fruit and vegetable products in the first 5 months of 2025 to the Chinese market decreased by 35.1%. In contrast, fruit and vegetable exports to the US increased by 65% compared to the same period in 2025.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), explained: The main reason is that the main export item, durian, has plummeted. In the first 5 months of the year, the total export of the "king of fruits" only reached 387 million USD, down 58% compared to the same period in 2024, of which the Chinese market decreased by 67.5% and only reached 278 million USD.
According to statistics, in the Chinese market, the market share of Vietnamese durian is currently only about 10%, while at its peak at the end of last year it was 40%. On the contrary, the "durian tycoon" of Thailand has quickly overcome the problem of banned substances such as yellow O and cadmium, thus regaining its market share and holding up to 84%.
"If there is no breakthrough in the process of checking and monitoring banned substances in durian exports, Vietnam's durian exports this year will only reach about 1 billion USD, down 50% compared to last year, and the total turnover of the fruit and vegetable industry will be about 6 billion USD," Mr. Nguyen worried.
On the other hand, fruit and vegetable imports in the first 6 months of the year reached 1.2 billion USD, up 17% over the same period last year. In the first 5 months of the year, fruit and vegetable imports from China reached 338 million USD, up 6.3% and from the US market reached 247 million USD, up 50%./.
