At the age of 85, artist Le Mai was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist, a belated but well-deserved recognition for her consistent contributions throughout her decades of artistic activities. But not only Le Mai, the names of the members of this 3-generation artistic family - from her parents, to her husband, her younger brothers and 3 daughters - have created a rare mark in the history of Vietnamese theater and cinema.
Background from an artistic family
Born in 1938 in Hai Phong , Le Mai is the daughter of playwright and poet Le Dai Thanh - who was active in the Central Drama Troupe at the same time as The Lu and Song Kim. In addition to his writing work, he was also a teacher, having taught many famous students such as writer Nguyen Hong, writer Nam Cao and Lieutenant General Bang Giang.
Meritorious Artist Le Mai's mother - Mrs. Dinh Ngoc Anh - is the daughter of a capitalist from the port city, and was an actress in the Gio Bien theater troupe. Meritorious Artist Le Mai's two younger brothers also continued the family tradition: painter Le Dai Chuc and director - People's Artist (NSND) Le Chuc.
Le Mai's youth was associated with the Central Drama Troupe, where she not only worked but also fell in love with People's Artist Tran Tien - one of the veteran artists of the Vietnamese drama stage.
People's Artist Tran Tien started his career with Cheo theater in 1954 and then became involved in drama and cinema. He studied at the famous actor course in 1961 with famous names such as The Anh, Doan Dung, Thanh Tu...
Throughout his career of more than half a century, he left his mark with classic roles: Dai Cat in Quan, De Thich in Hon Truong Ba, Da Hang Thich, Love Advisor in Ken Son-in-law... Those roles were so famous that the audience forgot his real name and called Tran Tien by the character's name.
Not only is he a talented performer, he is also creative in his roles, not afraid to "fight" with the director to make the role more suitable, even when the director is Luu Quang Vu or Nguyen Dinh Nghi. In the film industry, he has appeared in more than 20 big and small films, including Thang Bom, Chuyen Lang Nho, Ha Noi 12 Days and Nights...
However, the private lives of People's Artist Tran Tien and Meritorious Artist Le Mai were full of ups and downs. They separated and he passed away a few years ago. Their three daughters - three talented female artists - are the beautiful crystallization of an artistic marriage.
Three beautiful and talented daughters
The eldest daughter is Meritorious Artist Le Van (born in 1958) - from a dancer, has affirmed her solid position in cinema with memorable roles: Duyen in Bao gio cho den thang 10 , Chi Dau in Chi Dau , Lo in Thuong nho dong que ... The role in Bao gio cho den thang 10 brought her the Golden Lotus Award in 1985. In October 2006, Le Van released her autobiography Le Van, yeu va song - a book that caused a stir but also controversy, telling the truth about her life and her artistic family.
The second child is People's Artist Le Khanh (born in 1963), one of the few artists to be awarded the title of People's Artist at the age of 38. With a huge career in both theater and cinema, Le Khanh made her mark with diverse roles: Juliet in Romeo and Juliet , Dexdemona in Otenlo , Ly Chieu Hoang in Bamboo Forest ... On screen, she also made a splash with roles in Vertical Summer Afternoon, What I Haven't Had to Say, Old Girls with Many Tricks ...
Le Khanh is the only one of the three sisters who is still actively working in the arts at the age of over 60, constantly appearing in game shows, new movies and playing the role of trainer and advisor for many art programs. Her husband - director, Meritorious Artist Pham Viet Thanh is also still diligently pursuing art.
The youngest child, Meritorious Artist Le Vi, is more reserved than her two older sisters, but she has also left a deep impression on the audience. Her role in The Nameless Eucalyptus Tree (1996) helped her win the Golden Lotus Award at the Vietnam Film Festival that year.
"I think I'm lucky to have three grown children like that. They can do whatever they want, as long as they're happy, I'm happy too," Meritorious Artist Le Mai shared.
The family of Meritorious Artist Le Mai - People's Artist Tran Tien is a vivid example of a typical artistic family, where the love of theater and cinema is passed down through blood and breath, so that from generation to generation, art is still preserved, developed and spread.
