Taking place from 1-11 July at Berjaya Penang Hotel, Penang, Malaysia, the 2025 Southeast Asian Age Group Chess Championship is hosted by the Penang Chess Association under the patronage of the Southeast Asian Chess Federation and the Malaysian Chess Federation.
The tournament brings together hundreds of players from countries in the region.
The tournament brings together more than 300 players from 18 countries and territories, including: Australia, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Laos, Macau China, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, USA and Vietnam.
Vietnam sent the largest contingent of 143 players, competing in all three categories: standard chess, rapid chess, and blitz chess.
The competition tables are divided into 16 age groups for men and women, including U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, U20, along with groups over 50 years old (S50) and over 65 years old (S65), creating conditions for all ages to demonstrate their talents.
Young Vietnamese players win big in standard chess event
The standard chess competition took place from July 2 to 8. The Vietnamese team won overwhelmingly in 15/16 team events and 13/16 individual age groups, bringing home a total of 29 gold medals, including the individual championship of the S50 group by grandmaster Tu Hoang Thong.
Dang Anh Minh won the individual gold medal in the U18 men's category.
The most prominent among these are the age group champions, including: U6 male: Vo Quang Minh (7.5 points/9 games); U6 female: Nguyen Xuan Thao Han, U8 male: Nguyen Bao Nam, U10 male: Nguyen Xuan Phuong, U10 female: Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa, U12 male: Nguyen Luong Vu, U14 male: Nguyen Manh Duc, U14 female: Nguyen Minh Chi, U16 male: Nguyen Ha Thi Hai, U16 female: Dang Le Xuan Hien, U18 male: Dang Anh Minh, U18 female: Nguyen Binh Vy, U20 male: Nguyen Quoc Hy, S50: Tu Hoang Thong

On July 9 and 10, the players will continue to compete in rapid and blitz chess. With their current form, it is expected that the Vietnamese team will continue to achieve more achievements.
