New vitality, new value
When talking about Bac Ninh, we cannot help but mention Quan Ho folk songs because this is one of the cultural resources with unique and typical values for building the brand and developing tourism of the province. The fact that Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk songs were recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage on September 30, 2009 has created a big "boost" for this unique tourism product line.
Immediately after Quan Ho was registered, Bac Ninh successfully organized many "Returning to Quan Ho" Festival programs. Along with that, traditional festivals in many original Quan Ho villages such as Diem festival, Lim festival... were interested in building a civilized and healthy festival cultural environment, becoming cultural destinations attracting thousands of visitors to come and experience the festival.
The promotion and dissemination of Quan Ho cultural heritage has been focused on in many diverse and creative ways. Since August 2017, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has organized many boat singing sessions at Nguyen Phi Y Lan Lake and Vua Ba Lake. Each program has a different theme associated with the province's cultural events. In particular, there are interactions and exchanges between the audience, tourists and artists, artisans, and Lien Anh and Lien Chi singers in the original Quan Ho villages.
In recent years, the tourism brand “Returning to Quan Ho land” of Bac Ninh has been taking shape on the tourism map of Vietnam. However, according to many experts, in order to turn Quan Ho folk song heritage into a typical and unique tourism product, meeting the tastes of a new audience as well as being suitable for the current tourism market situation, it is not enough to just honor and preserve it, but also to elevate and effectively promote the unique values of the heritage.
Bac Ninh is focusing on perfecting new product lines with high specificity to help tourists have more interesting experiences and discoveries when coming to Bac Ninh. In particular, continuing to exploit and promote the potential of Quan Ho folk cultural heritage; building a master plan for the space of original Quan Ho villages; recreating the ancient Quan Ho cultural space; exploiting heritage values to develop tourism and linking the exploitation of Quan Ho folk songs with community tourism in the direction of harmonious development between conservation and economic and social development.
With its unique and distinctive value, Quan Ho folk songs are gradually becoming a “magnet” attracting visitors and creating a competitive advantage for Bac Ninh to develop tourism. Bac Ninh’s goal in the coming period is to, through tourism promotion activities, turn Quan Ho folk song heritage into a unique tourism product, attracting domestic and foreign tourists.

Take the family far away…
Over the years, Quan Ho folk songs have been preserved and developed by villages and hamlets. In particular, Quan Ho folk songs have been preserved and passed down through many generations by the people of Bac Ninh province, becoming a unique local identity and spreading into a special cultural space. Historical and cultural relics and traditional festivals associated with Quan Ho cultural activities have also been ranked for protection by the State.
With values recognized by the world, Quan Ho cultural heritage is truly an attractive resource for domestic and foreign tourists. The enduring vitality of Quan Ho landscapes still attracts and creates a lasting impression on visitors.
The province has issued many timely and effective policies and guidelines to preserve Quan Ho folk songs. In fulfilling its commitment to UNESCO, over the past 16 years, Bac Ninh has made continuous efforts to preserve and promote the value of heritage with many specific mechanisms and policies.
Assessing the conservation of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs in recent times, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province Nguyen Xuan Trung affirmed that the province has issued many timely and effective policies and guidelines that have really come into practice.
Bac Ninh is the leading province in the country in building a policy mechanism to honor and reward cultural heritage artisans, thereby contributing to motivating artisans to continue to nurture their passion, enthusiasm, and dedicate their talents to the work of preserving and promoting heritage values.
In addition, the province has spent a lot of investment funds to support the construction of cultural institutions and equipment related to the preservation and promotion of the value of Quan Ho folk songs heritage. The propaganda and promotion of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs have been strengthened in the media, in many major political, diplomatic and cultural events of the province, domestically and internationally such as: "Back to Quan Ho land" Festival program, art exchange program between some domestic heritages honored by UNESCO; Quan Ho singing program on boats... Thereby, contributing to preserving and promoting cultural values, promoting the traditional culture of Bac Ninh to domestic and international friends.
With its value and title as a world intangible cultural heritage, Quan Ho is an abundant resource for creation and transformation into impressive, unique and rich cultural products. Bac Ninh province determines that promoting and exploiting the economic potential of Quan Ho folk songs in the current globalization trend is not only something that should be done but more than that, it must be done.

In particular, in October 2024, in Hanoi, the event where Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Chinese Premier Li Qiang enjoyed Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk songs delighted domestic and international audiences... The beauty of sweet melodies, delicate and philosophical lyrics, and elegant and impressive costumes that cannot be found anywhere else have affirmed the cultural identity of Vietnam.
It can be said that Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs are increasingly influential domestically and internationally. Quan Ho appears as one of the typical representatives of Vietnamese culture in political events, foreign cultural activities, programs to welcome heads of state, meetings, cooperation and exchanges with foreign leaders...
From 2009 to present, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh has advised on organizing nearly 1,600 Quan Ho folk song performances to serve the people in the province and introduce and promote the heritage to domestic and international audiences. Particularly for heritage promotion activities abroad, Bac Ninh has organized 15 delegations of officials, artists and actors to perform in many countries: France, Germany, Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Japan, India, Korea, China... The Quan Ho cultural exchange and promotion performances have left many deep impressions on the overseas Vietnamese community and have been loved and welcomed by international audiences.
Intangible cultural heritage is an important driving force for the sustainable development of countries. The inclusion of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk song heritage in diplomatic activities has demonstrated the vision and awareness of cultural traditions at the local, national and international levels, contributing to enhancing cultural dialogue, respecting diversity, connecting communities, promoting peace and mutual understanding between countries and peoples.
After 16 years of being recognized by UNESCO, the heritage of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs is fully protected against the fluctuations of time and space. Not only that, Quan Ho also has a new look, new vitality, blending with the breath of the times, reaching further and further.
