Mr. Nguyen Van Thao - Chairman of Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative - Son La shared that in previous years, coffee trees were planted in Son La to alleviate poverty. By the 2000s, coffee trees had become a source of wealth for the ethnic minorities in Son La.

“To achieve this result, right from the first days of establishment, we have oriented to refer to the world and domestic coffee market to switch to growing high-quality coffee and processing specialty coffee. We determined that we must make specialty coffee to maintain the quality of precious Arabica coffee beans” – Mr. Nguyen Van Thao shared.

Accordingly, since 2017, when Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative was established, Mr. Thao has oriented the cooperative members to produce high-quality coffee in an organic direction. Because if coffee is produced on a mass scale, it cannot have high value.

Regarding export standards, coffee culture is different in each country, not all coffee can be exported. Therefore, he has researched carefully to understand the standards of each different market. For example, exporting to Germany must follow German processes and standards; exporting to the US or Japan must follow American or Japanese processes and standards, etc.

Since then, Bich Thao Coffee Cooperative has built 54 fermentation processing areas, fermenting according to the standards of each country it exports to. At the same time, it has increased investment in processing and manufacturing technology. Currently, the cooperative's specialty coffee for export has reached 97%, the remaining amount is for domestic use.

“By growing and processing roasted coffee, our product output is now very stable, bringing high income to growers and cooperatives. The price of specialty Arabica coffee for export can reach 230,000 - 270,000 VND/kg, many times higher than exporting raw coffee,” said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thao.

In the domestic market, Bich Thao coffee is also honored to be one of the rare products of Son La to be honored as a national 5-star OCOP product, bringing great value to farmers.
