Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company increases its capacity to excavate soil and rock, opening up coal production before the 2025 storm season.
Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company is one of the coal industry units that suffered heavy damage during the 2024 storm season, especially due to storm No. 3 ( Yagi ). While overcoming the consequences of rain and storms, while restoring and stabilizing production and business, from the beginning of 2025, the company focused its resources on dredging the entire volume of mud that had been washed to the bottom of the mine.
Head of the Environmental Investment Department of Ha Tu Coal Company, Ngo Duy Da, said: “To prevent storms, the company has renovated embankments, settling pits, ditches, and mine drainage belts... The drainage system at each floor has been renovated, effectively leading water to the settling pits, and the water pumping system is ready to operate, ensuring safety for people and equipment.”
Ha Tu Coal currently has 16 main and backup pumping systems, and a drainage pumping plan has also been specifically developed to suit weather conditions. In addition to ensuring drainage capacity in the mining area, the unit also actively inspects the lightning protection and power supply systems; ensuring smooth and stable operations during this year's rainy season.
The company is investing more than 64 billion VND to equip a new 1-stage pumping system with a capacity of 1,000 m3/hour to proactively and effectively respond to storms and floods, improving safety for people and equipment. Up to this point, all storm prevention works have been completed.
Deputy Director of Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company Tran Quoc Toan said: “The company proactively implemented “3 ready, 4 on-site”, organized drills and completed the calibration testing of electrical equipment installed at transformer stations, power stations, outdoor electrical cabinets supplying electric excavators, drills, and water pumps. The unit completed the calibration of safety equipment and grounding and lightning protection measuring tools periodically in 2025, limiting possible damage during the rainy and stormy season”.
Currently, all underground mines under TKV have completed dredging the central pumping tunnel and are expanding dredging ditches, especially in the main cross-seam mine area.
In case of prolonged heavy rain, the main and backup pumping stations must have the capacity to drain water and drain the mine as quickly as possible, maximally protecting the production area. Along with that, the units also check, repair, overhaul, and replace the pump system, valves, and accessories for the pumping pit to ensure drainage capacity during heavy rain; upgrade the system and equipment of the main and backup pumping stations.
Deputy Director of Duong Huy Coal Company Nguyen Chi Truong said: Up to this point, all storm prevention plans have been proactively implemented by the company, ready to respond. Pumping, drainage, ventilation and power supply systems have all been checked, calibrated and tested with good results.
Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company also strengthened the Command Board for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, proactively planned drainage pumping, strengthened monitoring, conducted drills to respond to heavy rain and landslides, and combined with propaganda to raise safety awareness for workers. The Bridge and Road Mechanical Construction Site 1, the company's main unit in quickly responding to storms and floods, established a rapid response team of six people on duty 24/7 in three production shifts.
Construction site manager Nguyen Quy Sy said: "In addition to production equipment, the unit has arranged three high-tech excavators to level and maintain all mine roads, ready to respond to key areas at risk of landslides at waste dumps, ensuring no production interruptions."
For underground mines and underground mine construction, TKV Group directs units to continuously review and inspect the terrain surface above the mining and tunneling areas of enterprises, especially in dry stream areas and low-lying areas; check pumping station tunnels, calculate additional pumps, improve pumping capacity and water storage tunnels of mines. Along with that, review and raise the level of the mine doors to prevent the risk of flooding due to heavy rain.
For open pit mines, TKV Group requires adjustments to issues related to mining techniques and drainage to suit the trend of climate change and heavy rain; carry out layered dumping according to the correct limits, directions, sequences and dumping techniques. Warehouse units, port management, and water transport continue to reinforce and support loading and unloading equipment, ensure safety when storms and tornadoes occur, and implement safety solutions for ships and boats anchored at ports.
In 2025, TKV strives to exploit nearly 37 million tons of clean coal domestically, consume 50 million tons, of which 42 million tons are for electricity production, with revenue of about 173,000 billion VND; and pay more than 17,000 billion VND to the budget in Quang Ninh. Effective storm prevention and maintaining production pace will help the Group fulfill its tasks and ensure energy security for the country's economic sectors.
TKV Deputy General Director Nguyen Huy Nam said: “Prevention of storms and rains is a permanent task, closely linked to the goal of protecting workers’ lives, ensuring property safety and maintaining stable production. Therefore, member units operating in open-pit or underground mines must consider this a regular task, clearly demonstrating a sense of responsibility and determination to ensure the highest safety for production and workers.”
The Group also requires units assigned to manage and operate storm prevention works to increase inspection and regular maintenance, avoid passive situations, pay special attention to building and organizing drills for incident response plans, and always have scenarios for handling all situations, especially in extreme and unusual weather conditions like the present.
