Vietnamese Sepak Takraw is aiming for SEA Games 33 with the highest determination.

Great strides and strengthened confidence

The strong rise of Vietnamese women's sepak takraw is not accidental but the result of a process of hard training and the right strategy. Starting from 2023, our golden girls have continuously achieved success. The gold medal in women's doubles at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia is considered the first "boost" in a long series of achievements. This was followed by 2 gold medals at the Asian Championship in China; the leading position at the World Championship in the women's 4-team event in Thailand. The peak was the gold medal in the women's 4-team at the 19th ASIAD in China, ending a 17-year gold drought at the Asian Games.

The most recent and impressive was at the end of March 2025, when the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team made history by defeating Thailand in the final match of the 4v4 women's World Cup 2025 in India to win the championship. This is the first time Vietnam has achieved this feat in an official tournament of the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF). This result also shows that the skill gap between Vietnam and the sepak takraw powerhouse Thailand is narrowing. This is an extremely positive signal, creating great motivation for the team in their preparation for the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand at the end of the year.

According to coach Tran Thi Vui, in the past two years, Vietnam has won two out of four finals in major tournaments against Thailand, something that has rarely been seen before. “Confidence and courage have been strengthened, helping athletes no longer fear the strongest opponent in the region,” coach Tran Thi Vui affirmed.

Preparations for SEA Games 33

To prepare for major tournaments this year, especially towards the 33rd SEA Games and further towards the 2026 ASIAD, the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team has gathered its forces early. Since the beginning of 2025, 16 members have gathered at the National High-Level Athlete Training Center. This squad includes core faces who have affirmed their talents such as: Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi My, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, Nguyen Thi Yen, along with a number of promising young U19 talents, to prepare for future succession.

Although the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team has achieved impressive results, coach Tran Thi Vui still recognizes the fact that the level of the team members is not completely equal. Some young players need to make more efforts in terms of expertise and accumulate competition experience.

In particular, commenting on her opponent Thailand at the 33rd SEA Games, Coach Tran Thi Vui said: Thailand is a country with a long history of developing Sepak Takraw, with the investment in athletes from a very early age (around 8 years old) and the movement developing widely throughout the country, creating a strong force in both quantity and expertise. While the Thai women's team can summon from 24 to 40 athletes, Vietnam only has about 16 athletes, which creates a certain disadvantage in terms of force balance.

However, overcoming the difficulties, the achievements at the 2025 World Cup are considered a great source of spiritual encouragement for the Vietnamese Sepak Takraw team. The whole team is practicing 6 hours at high intensity every day, including physical and technical exercises lasting 1-2 hours. In addition, the athletes also use the method of using the shuttlecock to hit the shuttlecock with strong force, helping to improve reflexes when receiving the shuttlecock and blocking the shuttlecock defensively. The hitting strategies, tactics and techniques of the 4-a-side competition are also trained at the highest level with the goal of achieving the highest achievement at the 33rd SEA Games in this event.

Members of the national women's sepak takraw team also showed their determination and maximum effort towards the set goal. According to athlete Nguyen Thi Yen: "All teams at the world championship and SEA Games 33 are quite even, no one can say they are too weak or too strong. We need to concentrate our best. To win, the whole team needs to practice 100% of their strength. The whole team must unite to get the best results and defeat the opponents.

In addition to maintaining its strength in the 4-person women's team event, the team also aims to improve its performance in the 2- and 3-person team events to increase competitiveness at the highest level."
