Archery is one of four national sports teams that apply AI in training and competition, along with boxing, shooting and taekwondo.
Currently, there are 4 national sports teams: boxing, archery, shooting, taekwondo that have applied AI through software transfer from a French company, the result of the strategic cooperation process between Vietnamese sports and French sports that has been strongly promoted recently.
After testing with 4 teams, based on and evaluating actual results, it is expected that in 2026, the sports industry will start applying AI to many key sports to achieve optimal efficiency between technology and specialized training.
In fact, it doesn’t take the AI boom to make technology important to high-performance sports. From small details like a pair of shoes, a suitable jersey to bigger things like diet and food, technology is everywhere.
The problem is that when it comes to applying technology, the core is having complete and accurate data. That is the biggest bottleneck of Vietnamese sports, although from managers to coaches and athletes, everyone knows very well the necessity of technology.
This bottleneck has existed for a long time, since the time when Vietnamese coaches "longingly" watched their foreign colleagues holding personal cameras to record international matches in the 1980s and 1990s.
The problem is not the camera, but the recording and storage, data analysis. However, it was not until after 1990 that some of our teams were equipped with video cameras. However, everything stopped at the level of collecting images for the coach to review later, not meaningful in terms of data.
In other words, the application of technology in Vietnam is far behind the world due to objective conditions. Up to now, even in national athletics competitions, we are still using old "technology" such as referees' handheld stopwatches.
In a sport that requires extremely high technology like swimming, our modern swimming pools do not have sensors and underwater recording equipment installed during athletes' practice.
Without specialized machines and equipment, people are needed. And even if there are enough people to collect data manually, there must be a human resource to synthesize and input data to specialized software. That means a data processing center is needed, which comes with a significant cost…
A representative of the Vietnam Sports Administration said: "Vietnam Sports wants to have technology equipment installed at training sites. When athletes exercise according to each exercise, the index is always collected and transmitted to the storage device and the integrated AI application will perform analysis and send it to the receiving place. But currently, the 5 main training sites in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, and Bac Ninh do not have any training houses or training grounds equipped with electronic sensors to collect exercise indexes."
This means that without real-time metrics, applying technology or AI will yield half-baked results.
In the end, it is still a matter of investment. When the annual budget is still spread out for many goals, including movement development and facilities, it is clear that the amount of money spent on technology equipment will not be much.
The current solution of the sports industry still prioritizes sending athletes to train in advanced countries such as France and Japan through cooperation programs, so that they can use modern sports technology from other countries.
