Instead of pursuing entertainment events with big stages and vibrant performers, some producers choose a more unique direction with healing programs.
Take everyday materials
The resonance between natural laughter and humane messages about family affection and neighborly love has helped healing reality TV shows win the hearts of many audiences.
The reality TV show "Haha Family - The Vast Sky Days" (abbreviated as "Haha Family") is airing at 8:00 p.m. every Saturday on VTV3. The program is a Vietnamese adaptation of the "HaHa Farmer" format of MangoTV (China), invested in and produced by YeaH1 Group, and holds the copyright in Vietnam.
The program brings together 5 faces: Jun Pham, Rhymastic, Bui Cong Nam, Ngoc Thanh Tam and Duy Khanh. They will live 7 days and 6 nights in the countryside and immerse themselves in the local culture. At each stage of the journey, "HaHa Family" will have more guests visiting their home, they are famous artists, have been active in the art field for many years and are familiar to the public.
The artists will experience life in rural areas of Vietnam, starting in Lao Cai and Quang Ngai, to explore the nature, people, and local culture. Images such as Jun Pham getting dirty when he first learned to plow, Bui Cong Nam "talking" to buffaloes in the local language, or Ngoc Thanh Tam chopping cassava, cooking bran, and teaching English to children in the village for the first time... are widely shared by audiences on social media platforms.
According to data from Kantar Media, episode 1 of the show reached the top 1 on the national TV viewership chart. On the online platform, "Haha Family" also recorded more than 2 million views for episode 1, while episodes 1+ and 2 both reached more than 1 million views each. Episode 1+ is currently ranked 12th on YouTube Vietnam's trending chart (as of June 24, 2025).
These telling numbers confirm that the appeal of reality TV shows comes not only from the artists' names but also from the closeness and blurring of the gap between artists and honest farmers.
Connect with nature
Previously, in programs with the trend of "going home", "going back to the countryside" such as: "Brilliant Journey", "2 Days 1 Night", "Our House Has Each Other"..., artists experienced and discovered the unique cultural features of each region. Taking advantage of the Vietnamese context, these programs kept viewers captivated with many high-altitude shots that overwhelmed viewers with the vast and majestic space of mountains, forests, rivers and streams. In addition, the simplicity of the players and the interaction with the people at the locations the program passed through brought the audience a sense of lightness when watching.
According to psychologist Tieu Minh Son, healing reality TV shows attract viewers because audiences today are looking for healing through reconnecting with nature. "The trend of healing reality TV shows with cultural roots is not only an entertainment choice but also a way for viewers to regain balance and motivation in a busy world ," said Tieu Minh Son.
Healing reality TV shows also face challenges. The staleness of their content creation and the overuse of rural imagery can make them lose their appeal.
Many viewers expressed their expectation that reality TV producers would explore and innovate to better meet the tastes of Vietnamese audiences. After all, uniqueness and appeal are the only criteria that will help Vietnamese TV shows go far.
Each reality TV show brings different experiences to the audience. The audience not only increases their experience but also gets more love for their homeland. The healing reality show has cleverly touched the young people's need to enjoy new things in art.
