Play and learn
Based on practical needs, this year the Children's House of Ca Mau province opened a training course called "Journey of Experience to Grow Up". The first course attracted more than 50 students, many of whom were from rural areas. In just 4 days, the students were involved on the following topics: Learning to be a firefighter; Preventing abuse and school violence; Skills to prevent drowning and the topic of the value of gratitude. In addition, the students were engaged and practiced on self-reliance and self-care skills such as going to the market, cooking; washing and drying clothes; arranging blankets; practicing communication skills, teamwork, etc.
Nguyen Phuong Nha, 11 years old (U Minh, Ca Mau) shared that she found the course useful and meaningful, as it allowed her to have fun and practice life skills. "I was guided by teachers and staff in charge to go to the market to buy each type of vegetable. In addition, the teachers led us to carefully check the labels, origin, and expiration date when buying goods; how to choose fresh vegetables, tubers, fruits, meat, and fish... She also taught us how to cook dishes from the products we bought. After the course, I helped my mother cook family meals or when my mother was away from home, I could also prepare meals for myself," Phuong Nha said.
Also participating in the course, Hoang Ngoc Bao, 10 years old (Song Doc, Ca Mau) shared: In the past, in the summer, I stayed at home to play games or gathered with friends in the neighborhood to play some folk games. This year, my parents let me participate in the course "Journey of Experience to Grow Up", I felt happy and learned many useful and necessary skills in life. If I understand and practice well, it will not only help me but also help others.
Ms. La Thi To Quyen - Head of Team Working Methodology Department, Ca Mau Provincial Children's House said that at first, when participating in the course, many children were shy, even crying because they missed their parents and family. However, with the guidance and care of the staff and teachers, the children quickly integrated, played with friends and enthusiastically participated in the activities.
"I see that after the course, the children are more confident, have positive energy, and are happy when they return home. In the future, the Provincial Children's House will continue to open similar classes, contributing to creating a healthy playground for children in the summer, helping them to both study and play, and develop comprehensively, from physical to mental," Ms. Quyen informed.

Diverse experiential activities
Not only the Children's House, many units, localities and schools in Ca Mau province also organize many experiential activities, attracting the participation of students and children in the area during the summer. Typically, the Summer Retreat was held at Kim Son Pagoda (Hoa Thanh, Ca Mau).
“Here, the children listen to sermons about filial piety to grandparents and parents; love for the homeland and country; and are also trained in some skills in communication, preventing abuse, etc. The course not only creates a meaningful playground for the children, equips them with useful knowledge and skills in life, but also cultivates and nurtures morality, a pure soul, healthy living and goodness, helping them develop comprehensively in morality, intelligence and physical strength,” shared Venerable Thich Nu Dieu Chanh, Abbot of Kim Son Pagoda.
To meet the increasing needs of parents, especially in urban areas, some kindergartens in Ca Mau province, especially private schools, maintain childcare activities during the summer. Unlike the regular curriculum, for summer classes, schools mainly organize fun activities, experiences and soft skills development for students.
"Hanh Phuc Kindergarten (An Xuyen, Ca Mau) currently has 5 summer classes, each class has 15-20 children. During the childcare period from June to August, the school focuses on caring for and organizing fun and experiential activities for children such as: Children practice being farmers (planting, caring for, harvesting vegetables); participating in pottery making, fishing, practicing being doctors, teachers, reporters... Depending on the age of the children, the school will arrange appropriate activities to create joy and excitement for the children", Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong - Vice Principal of Hanh Phuc Kindergarten shared.
Ms. Tran Minh Nguyet (An Xuyen, Ca Mau) has a 5-year-old child, sharing: Due to her busy work schedule and not having time to take care of her child, she sent her child to a daycare school during the summer. "I want my child to have a fun summer, not to have to study during the summer. The school's curriculum is mainly for children to play and practice life skills, so I feel secure sending my child. Compared to just hanging around at home, watching the phone, I find that my child is happy when attending classes. When he comes home, he often shares that he knows how to do housework, so his parents are also happy," Ms. Nguyet said.
"Training life skills for children in the summer not only helps them gain more experience but also contributes significantly to the process of growing up. Especially for children in rural areas, these activities will help children develop comprehensively, from physical to mental, and better prepare for the future.
With that in mind, Ca Mau Provincial Youth Union actively coordinates with the Department of Education and Training and localities to organize many recreational activities, combined with life skills training for students during the summer. In particular, it maintains the organization of free swimming classes to train survival skills in water, limiting accidents caused by drowning," said Mr. Tran Dang Khoa - Deputy Secretary of Ca Mau Provincial Youth Union.
