Vietnam Women's Sepak Takraw Team Achieves Excellent Performance at 2025 Sepak Takraw World Cup
This is the most outstanding and historic achievement as it is the first time Vietnam has won a gold medal at a Sepak Takraw World Cup, after winning silver medals 5 times in 4 previous tournaments since 2011.
Moreover, the fact that the Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw team was able to overcome their fateful opponent Thailand in the final match was not only a simple victory but also a spectacular overthrow, breaking the monopoly that had existed for a long time.
Journey to the top
Being a sport introduced to Vietnam around 1990 and rapidly developing in Hanoi and some other localities, Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw has had a long and arduous journey to assert its position in the international arena.
To achieve such success, we cannot fail to mention Mr. Ha Kha Luan - who has made great contributions in laying the foundation and guiding the development of Vietnamese rattan ball, especially women's rattan ball. Although he is no longer here, the legacy he left for Vietnamese rattan ball is enormous.
After 4 years of building and developing the movement, the first official tournament of this sport was the National Club Championship held in Hanoi in 1994. Not long after that, Sepak Takraw became an official competition of the National Sports Festival (now the National Sports Festival).
Along with the strong development of women's Sepak Takraw, the national women's team was also established in 1997 with athletes of the first "Golden generation" such as: Luu Thi Thanh, Nguyen Hai Thao, Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, Nguyen Thi Thuy An, Nguyen Thi Thu Ba, Do Thi Thu Hien, Dang Thi Hien, Cao Thi Yen, Le Thi Hanh, Nguyen Thi Hoa, Nguyen Bach Van, Nguyen Duc Thu Hien... Also that year, at the 19th SEA Games in Indonesia, the girls of Vietnam's women's Sepak Takraw won the first bronze medal, an encouraging achievement for a new team.
Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw continued to affirm its position when in 1998, in Bangkok, Thailand, the women's Sepak Takraw team demonstrated excellence with a silver medal in the women's 3-across event at the first ASIAD.
The most important milestone of Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw is the 2003 SEA Games gold medal. This is also the first gold medal of Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw at the regional playground, marking a breakthrough development and opening a successful era for this sport. Moreover, this is also an important premise, creating momentum and confidence for resounding successes in the continental sports arena - ASIAD.
Accurate, at the 15th ASIAD in Doha (Qatar), the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team won 2 gold medals in the women's doubles and women's team (Regu). This was a historic feat, especially when they overcame strong opponents, including Thailand - the Asian Sepak Takraw powerhouse. The Sepak Takraw gold medals at that time not only contributed significantly to the achievements of the Vietnamese sports delegation but also strongly inspired other sports, showing that Vietnam's ability to compete in the continental arena is completely possible.
Next, at the 19th ASIAD in 2023 (Hangzhou, China), the Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw team won the gold medal in the women's 4-person event. This is the second gold medal at the ASIAD arena for Vietnamese Sepak Takraw after 17 years. This achievement shows the confirmation of the position of Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw, especially under the leadership of coach Tran Thi Vui, who has made great contributions to building and developing the team in recent years.
Standing on the top podium twice at the ASIAD in 2006 and 2023, these gold medals are not only the pride of the sport but also an important mark in the history of Vietnamese Sports, proving the efforts, talent and bravery of the Golden Girls.
From the initial steps of getting acquainted with this sport until now, the athletes of the Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw team have continuously trained, competed and achieved results, thereby gradually affirming their position, rising to the top position in the region and approaching the top of the world. And the brilliant achievements at the Sepak Takraw World Cup in 2025 once again clearly demonstrate the remarkable development, the crystallization of a careful, scientific preparation process and the brave fighting spirit of the whole team. This is a great pride for Vietnamese Sports and a motivation for women's Sepak Takraw to continue to go further in the future.
The list of coaches and athletes of the Vietnamese women's Sepak Takraw team awarded Certificates of Merit for their excellent achievements in winning medals at the Sepak Takraw World Cup 2025, includes: Coach Tran Thi Vui and athletes: Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi My, Nguyen Thi Khanh Ly, Nguyen Thi Yen, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, Vu Thi Van Anh.
