Summer airfares increased slightly
Entering July, the peak of the summer travel season, domestic and international airfares have begun to show a slight upward trend. Surveys on online booking platforms show that travel demand is increasing sharply, leading to airlines adjusting ticket prices flexibly according to the law of supply and demand. People are increasingly accustomed to seasonal increases in airfares and are willing to pay if flight services are stable, punctual and safe.
Ms. Do Hai Thuong, a resident of Sai Gon ward, said she had just booked 3 tickets to Tuy Hoa and Dak Lak with a total cost of 4.2 million VND, an increase of about 300,000 VND/ticket compared to the same period last year. "It is normal for ticket prices to increase during the summer. This year, they are a bit higher, but I still bought them because this is an annual tradition for my children to visit their grandparents. With this price, I can accept it, as long as the plane flies on time and the service is stable and safe," Ms. Like shared.
Likewise, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Dang, an office worker, said that he had just booked a package tour for his whole family to Hanoi during the summer. "I chose to book the tour because the travel agency had better airfares if I booked early. Summer is a time for my children to gather and relax after a stressful time studying, so I am willing to accept a slight increase in ticket prices, as long as there are suitable tickets available for the whole family to have the trip as desired," Mr. Shared.
According to Tin Tuc and Dan Toc Newspaper reporters, domestic airfares on major routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, Hanoi - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc currently range from 1.1 - 2.2 million VND/way (including taxes and fees). Round-trip tickets range from 2.6 - 4 million VND, an increase of 5 - 10% compared to last month. Specifically, the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route has the lowest price from 890,000 VND/way with Vietjet Air (excluding taxes and fees), while Vietnam Airlines lists prices from 1.98 million VND/way.
In addition, flights to coastal tourist destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City - Tuy Hoa also recorded ticket prices ranging from 1.12 - 1.5 million VND/way, suitable for families with short-term vacation needs. However, "hot" routes such as Hanoi - Phu Quoc from July 15 to 20 are recording significant increases, ranging from 5 - 8 million VND round trip depending on the airline and flight time.
In the international segment, nearby flights such as Ho Chi Minh City - Bangkok, Hanoi - Singapore still maintain reasonable prices from 1.6 - 2.5 million VND/way. Meanwhile, long-haul flights have started to increase slightly: Hanoi - Seoul up to 4.5 - 6.1 million VND/round trip, up about 8% compared to June. Notably, the Ho Chi Minh City - San Francisco route operated by Vietnam Airlines currently records prices up to 22 - 28 million VND/round trip, depending on time and seat class.
Although airfares have increased, many representatives of travel companies say that tourists still have the opportunity to save money if they proactively book tickets 3-4 weeks before their departure date, or choose to fly mid-week or during off-peak hours.
Mr. Pham Anh Vu, Deputy Director of Viet Tourism Media Joint Stock Company, said that the number of domestic tourists in the summer of 2025 is expected to increase by 15-20% compared to the same period last year, showing that tourism demand has recovered strongly after a period of stagnation due to increased input costs. Although it is the peak season, tourists can still enjoy summer trips at reasonable prices if they are proactive and flexible with their travel time early in advance and take advantage of promotional programs from airlines during non-peak hours.
According to statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the total number of domestic flights in the summer of 2025 is expected to reach nearly 68,558, equivalent to about 745 flights per day and providing nearly 14 million seats. This figure increases by 21% in flights and 18% in seats compared to the same period in 2024. With the above number of tickets, people still have many opportunities to hunt for cheap tickets during the peak summer tourist season.
Airlines increase capacity, launch promotions
To meet the explosive demand for air travel during the peak summer tourist season, major airlines in Vietnam have quickly adjusted their operating plans, added flights, and launched many attractive incentive programs.
A representative of Vietnam Airlines said that the airline will operate more than 43,000 flights during the peak summer season of 2025, equivalent to nearly 9 million seats, an increase of 14% over the same period last year. Of which, the domestic flight network alone is prioritized with more than 6.3 million seats, a sharp increase of 28% to serve the maximum domestic travel demand.
Routes connect central areas such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to prominent tourist destinations such as Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, Quy Nhon, etc. have significantly increased their frequency. The goal is to reduce pressure on some peak days and ensure passenger benefits within a reasonable price range.
At the same time, Vietjet Air also announced that it will add more than 600,000 seats on its domestic and international flight network. In addition to serving domestic routes, Vietjet also increased flight frequency to international destinations such as Australia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and many Southeast Asian countries.
In particular, on July 7, Vietjet will launch a discount program of up to 77% for millions of air tickets applied to all domestic and international flights. The program applies to itineraries from 11/82025 until March 28, 2026, enabling consumers to plan long-term travel at a cost savings.
From a management perspective, a representative of the Ministry of Construction, the unit currently in charge of the aviation sector, also said that the current ticket prices reflect the law of supply and demand, especially during special times such as summer, Tet, and long holidays. However, in order to ensure reasonable prices, the Ministry issued Decision 1723/QD-BXD dated December 31, 2024, regulating the ceiling price for basic economy class tickets for domestic flights.
In addition, the Ministry also directed the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to coordinate in regulating operating capacity and reasonably allocate flights between routes, avoiding local overload and putting pressure on some "hot" routes.
According to the Ministry of Construction, an important factor affecting ticket prices is the fluctuation of input costs, about 70 - 80% of the cost of a flight comes from fuel, rental, aircraft maintenance, most of which are paid in foreign currency. Therefore, the strong fluctuations in Jet A1 fuel prices and USD exchange rates will directly affect operating costs and ticket prices. On the other hand, the fact that maintaining airlines stable operations in the context of high costs and strong exchange rate fluctuations shows their efforts to proactively manage and balance the market.
To reduce pressure on consumers, implementing promotional programs, effectively exploiting the fleet and optimizing costs are long-term strategies that need to be maintained. In addition, authorities and businesses still need to continue to coordinate to contribute to stabilizing ticket prices, creating favorable conditions for people to access safe and convenient aviation services in the summer of 2025.
