When they heard this news, the parents of the twins were very surprised because they were worried that one of their children would not pass. In the entrance exam to grade 10 of Ha Long Specialized High School in 2025, Tung Lam won the top prize in Physics with 9.5 points in the specialized subject and a total admission score of 46.75/50. With this score, Tung Lam led the entire Ha Long Specialized School. Tuan Lam became the runner-up with a close score: Math 8.5, Literature 8.25. Both scored 10 in English.
Upon receiving the news, Mr. Do Bien Thuy, the twins' father, said that the whole family was surprised and moved. Mr. Thuy said that after the exam, both Tung Lam and Tuan Lam said they “did the test normally”, making their parents not dare to expect high results.
"At that time, I didn't dare think that my children would become valedictorians and salutatorians. I just hoped that they would continue to go to the same school," Thuy confided.
For him and his wife, this is not only a joy of achievement, but also a worthy compensation for the months of their children studying tirelessly and without rest.

Children study for exams, the whole family gets into the groove.
Mr. Do Bien Thuy shared that during the final exam preparation period for grade 10, his children "studied day and night", causing their parents and grandparents to get caught up in the cycle and sometimes felt sorry and wanted to "brake" their children.
In addition to studying in the morning, afternoon and evening classes, the two brothers continued to attend extra classes. All week, they had dinner almost all the time on the bus, on the road, and only once came home to eat dinner. "My parents took turns, coming home from work in the afternoon, they hurriedly ate first, then carried two lunch boxes for the two children and took them to their classes," said Mr. Thuy.
There were days when Tung Lam and Tuan Lam fell asleep on the bus while discussing their notes on the way to the exam review sites. One time, their father deliberately took the wrong route so that they could rest a little more before going to class.
Many nights, at 2-3am, the couple still heard the children's rattling so they woke up to remind them to close their books and go to bed. Some days, after the morning class, the children were tired and had headaches, so the parents proactively suggested skipping the afternoon class so that the children could rest and regain their strength.
"The children are self-motivated, their parents never force them. We only encourage them to study while maintaining their energy and try to ensure their meals and sleep," said Mr. Thuy. The 43-year-old father said that many times, seeing their children stay up late and wake up at 4-5am to study, he and his wife felt sorry and told them to sleep more, but Tung Lam and Tuan Lam both insisted, "We study better at that time."
Later, when they passed the exam, the two children confided to their parents that they had set a goal of getting a high score before the exam, not just a passing score. "Our parents are very confident and proud, not because of their achievements, but because of their will to progress, their self-awareness, and their determination," said Mr. Thuy, hoping that the two children will maintain this spirit in the next stages.
Breakthrough from love of Physics
Tung Lam and Tuan Lam were born prematurely, with modest weights (1.8 kg and 1.7 kg). Throughout primary school and up to grade 6, they only studied at school, combined with 1-2 English sessions/week at the center and spent time on their favorite sports such as soccer, jogging... Their academic results were not outstanding, usually in the top 10, 15 of the class.

The turning point came in 7th grade, when both brothers revealed their passion for Physics. Encouraged and nurtured by their homeroom teacher and subject teacher, in 8th grade, both of them took part in the Natural Science competition. Tung Lam won second prize at the city level, third prize at the provincial level, while Tuan Lam won third prize and encouragement prize. A year later, both brothers won the gold medal in the Physics Olympiad organized by the school and first prize at the provincial level.
As a result, both of them became more and more interested in learning and proactively oriented their study path. In addition to lecture hours, the two brothers took the opportunity to practice questions, exchange notes, and grade each other's papers.
"What books to buy and where to study are all dictated by the children. Parents only take them to and from school, pay tuition, buy books, and take care of food and drink," said Mr. Bien Thuy.
The exam is just the beginning...
Although they are twins, Tung Lam and Tuan Lam are quite different: Tung Lam is more quiet and reserved, while Tuan Lam is more talkative and active. However, from childhood to adulthood, the two have never raised their voices or quarreled with each other.
Ms. Bui Thi Kim Oanh, Physics teacher at Trong Diem Secondary School (Ha Long), who discovered and nurtured the two students' talents since grade 7, commented that Tung Lam and Tuan Lam are both obedient, good at studying, and very charming.
Ms. Oanh also talked about the school's "Physics team tradition", where seniors always come back to inspire and support juniors like a family. When Tung Lam and Tuan Lam were in grade 8, their teacher put them on the team to compete for excellent students at higher levels. They were exposed to many talented seniors from grade 9, so they were more motivated and set big goals.

Ms. Doan Hanh, homeroom teacher of class 9A8, was impressed by the self-study spirit and friendliness of Tung Lam and Tuan Lam. She also revealed that both of them had won a provincial bronze medal and a city gold medal in the Phu Dong Sports Festival soccer event.
According to Ms. Hanh, to win the valedictorian and salutatorian positions, the two students overcame many strong opponents thanks to a combination of guidance from teachers, support from the school, support from their families, and most importantly, their own will.
With a clear goal, right after finishing the 10th grade exam, Tuan Lam registered for an online Russian language course, planning to study engineering and science in Russia. Tung Lam wanted to pursue Physics in depth and take part in major exams. They even asked to study specialized math during the summer because "staying at home just sleeping, playing, and watching TV is boring". In response, their parents half-jokingly said: "You've just worked hard for so many days, why don't you have some fun and relax a bit so that we can rest too!"
