The Can Tho Oncology Hospital construction investment project has a scale of 500 beds, with a total investment of 1,700 billion VND, from ODA loans from the Hungarian Government and counterpart funds from Can Tho City. Can Tho Oncology Hospital started construction in October 2017, and has been around for 8 years and is still unfinished and is being "shelved".
From July 2022 to present, the project has been forced to stop construction because the construction contract between the unit and the consortium of contractors, as well as the project's loan agreement, has expired.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directed Can Tho City to urgently complete the Can Tho Oncology Hospital Project. The Prime Minister shared that Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City is currently very crowded, cramped and overloaded. Meanwhile, most of the patients come from the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta, causing difficulties and costs for people during the treatment process.

The Prime Minister emphasized: The project is invested by the locality, so Can Tho City needs to urgently complete the procedures to submit to relevant ministries and branches for consideration. The important thing is to implement it with high determination, and soon put the hospital into operation to serve the people.
Regarding the current status of the project, Mr. Tran Van Lau, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, said that the project uses ODA capital from the Hungarian Government of about 1,393 billion VND, and the city's counterpart capital is 334 billion VND. Currently, the hospital has stopped construction since July 1, 2022, the project has only disbursed 253 billion VND, mainly to complete the construction of the rough part, without installing medical equipment and interior furniture.

The Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee proposed that the Prime Minister agree to stop using ODA capital and consider supporting more than VND 1,300 billion from the budget to continue implementing the project. If approved, the city commits to complete the procedures, documents and complete the construction, putting the Can Tho Oncology Hospital into use by the end of 2026.
Previously, on July 11, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Van Lau inspected the Can Tho Oncology Hospital project. During the inspection, the head of Can Tho City government said that the project is very necessary for the people of the Mekong Delta, if not completed soon, it will cause great waste.
