Diversifying livelihoods for poor households

In recent years, from project capital and national target programs, localities have focused on investing in building infrastructure, creating livelihoods for people, especially poor, near-poor and ethnic minority households. With the motto of "leaving no one behind", support solutions have been developed synchronously, creating motivation to help people have conditions for economic development.

In previous years, Mr. Dieu Dray's family in Bon P'rang I, Quang Truc commune (Lam Dong) mainly grew upland rice and coffee on 2 hectares of hilly land, but the efficiency was not high. In 2010, from the capital of the National Agricultural Extension Program, his family received nearly 1 hectare of macadamia to grow. Participating in the program, he was able to attend training courses, transfer techniques, and receive support for seeds and agricultural materials. Thanks to that, from a new crop, macadamia has become a "hunger eradication and poverty reduction tree" for his family.

According to Mr. Dieu Dray, with more than 1 hectare of macadamia, each year he harvests more than 1.5 tons of fruit, the selling price ranges from 90,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses he earns over 100 million VND/year. In addition to growing macadamia, Mr. Dieu Dray also grows coffee and raises cows, so the family's income is increasingly stable. From a low-income household, Mr. Dieu Dray has become a typical household in overcoming difficulties and escaping poverty in Quang Truc commune.

Mr. Dieu Dray said: “Previously, my family’s life was difficult. We had temporary accommodation, lacked land for production, and were hungry all year round. Since the State supported us with capital and seedlings, my family’s life has stabilized.”

Mr. Dieu Hien's family in Duc An commune was also a poor household in the past. After 3 years of participating in the model "5 party members help 1 household escape poverty" ("5+1" group), Mr. Dieu Hien's family has risen above poverty. Mr. Dieu Hien shared: "Our family has received support from the Dak Song District Military Command in many aspects. In particular, we are fortunate to receive both material and spiritual support, so our economy is increasingly stable."

Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Department and defense economic units are located in border communes to support people in developing production.

To support poor households in developing production, the “5+1” teams and groups are assigned to closely follow and guide people on techniques for growing crops and raising livestock for each household. Support work is also carried out in the form of materials such as machinery, seeds of crops, livestock, fertilizers, poultry feed, etc. instead of cash.

According to comrade K'Thanh - Secretary of Thuan Hang commune, the work of transferring livelihoods and supporting breeding animals is one of the important solutions to help people stabilize their lives. Since the beginning of 2025, the border communes of Lam Dong province have simultaneously developed a program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses for poor and near-poor households. During the days of launching the program, 18 houses were donated with a total value of up to 1.1 billion VND. "To achieve this goal, Thuan Hanh commune has called for the joint contributions of the community, businesses and social organizations", said comrade K'Thanh.

During the implementation of housing support projects, Quang Tan, Tuy Duc and Quang Truc communes were supported with 193 houses. Each household was supported with a house with a minimum usable area of 30 m2, "3 hard" (hard floor, hard frame - wall, hard roof) and a life span of 20 years or more.

Replicating poverty reduction models

In recent years, poverty reduction projects and programs have been implemented synchronously and effectively in communes along the border of Lam Dong province. In the period of 2021 - 2025, many capital sources allocated by the Central Government have been focused on implementing projects by localities, supporting production development, diversifying livelihoods and replicating poverty reduction models, vocational training, supporting communes under Program 30a, Program 135, etc.

To replicate poverty reduction models, communes have focused on implementing and replicating poverty reduction pilot models such as: Model of raising crossbred fighting chickens in Quang Tan commune, model of raising goats in Quang Truc commune, model of improving commercial sweet potato varieties in Tuy Duc commune...

According to the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions of Lam Dong province, the Poverty Reduction Program has contributed to positively changing the appearance of rural villages, hamlets, and border communes. Up to now, the socio-economic infrastructure has been gradually completed, increasingly meeting the needs of production and people's lives. The lives of the poor have been gradually improved with increased support for various aspects of shortages, access to information, and clean water sources...

Lam Dong has a border with Cambodia of about 141 km. The border area of the province has 8,833 households, with about 75,926 people, of which about 26.7% are ethnic minorities.

National target programs and ethnic programs and policies have contributed to promoting socio-economic development, stabilizing security and politics, and reducing poverty in localities. In particular, from the project “Diversifying livelihoods, developing poverty reduction models”, border communes have been allocated hundreds of billions of VND to support people in developing production.

From the above capital sources, localities have effectively implemented models and projects to diversify livelihoods and develop poverty reduction models. In particular, hundreds of models of cultivation, livestock breeding, and non-agricultural models have been transferred and effectively promoted in farming households.

Specialized levels and sectors also organized training courses, providing guidance on methods and techniques of animal husbandry and farming for households participating in the project. The implementation of sustainable poverty reduction programs and projects in Lam Dong border communes, although still facing difficulties and limitations, with the joint efforts and determination of the entire political system from the province to the grassroots level and the efforts of households, has brought about many practical results.

The programs and projects not only help households escape poverty and gradually become rich, but also contribute significantly to the whole country joining hands to build a new countryside that is increasingly rich, beautiful, modern and civilized.

Up to now, many areas in the border area have truly become "livable places" to integrate into the new development space of Lam Dong province.
