Current status of environmental protection in Lam Dong
During the online meeting with localities on environmental protection on August 12, 2025, chaired by Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen, Mr. Nguyen Van Son - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Truong Ward - Da Lat said: Previously, the communes and wards of the old Da Lat City signed a contract with the Urban Environmental Services Company to collect household waste until the end of June 2025, but have not signed a new contract for the last 6 months of the year. Daily waste is collected to the Green Energy Joint Stock Company's waste treatment plant, with the amount of waste up to 300 tons, while the plant's capacity is only 200 tons. Due to incomplete investment conditions, only a part of the waste can be treated, the remaining waste is stored on an area of 10 hectares, causing landslides and is at risk of further landslides leading to environmental pollution. In addition, agricultural waste and medical waste currently have no storage facilities, nor are there any funds for treatment. Xuan Truong Ward - Da Lat also has Phat Chi - Tram Hanh industrial park with a wastewater system locally invested by enterprises, but there is no centralized wastewater system, so it cannot be expanded...
The problem of Xuan Truong Ward - Da Lat is typical of the difficulties in environmental protection work in the whole province, causing environmental pollution to increase due to overloaded garbage dumps, landfills that have not been expanded, waste treatment plants that have operated at full capacity, low waste treatment prices compared to the cost of garbage collection services... In addition, because environmental protection work has not been met, many businesses cannot invest or cannot continue to expand investment in production and business development...
Urgent need for environmental protection
After July 1, Lam Dong became the province with the largest area in the country with more than 24 thousand km2 and a population of more than 3.8 million people; has sea, border, renewable energy plants, mineral exploitation plants... and waste from energy projects, livestock, industrial parks (14 industrial parks, 38 industrial clusters, 33 craft villages...), not to mention domestic waste... The role of environmental protection work is specified, with 2/8 targets on general economic development and 315 tasks out of more than 900 tasks of commune-level administrative units related to environmental protection...
Many models of socialization of waste collection have been established and have had quite positive impacts (mainly in the form of landfills), with operating funds contributed by people. Socialization of environmental protection has also been actively implemented by organizations and unions, typically: the model of "Family of 5 no, 3 clean", the club "Women friendly with the environment", the movement "Women commit not to litter, build family garbage pits" ... deployed in nearly 70% of communes/wards in the whole province. However, the socialization methods are fragmented, unprofessional, and lack equipment, so they have not met the practical requirements of sustainable environmental protection...
The need for more resources to solve the waste problem for environmental protection and economic development is affirmed by almost all leaders of 124 communes, wards and special zones in the province. In particular, the need for long-term and sustainable scientific treatment, source classification (solid waste, industrial waste, agricultural waste, organic waste, medical waste) ... as well as attracting investment and implementing waste treatment projects are proposed solutions.
Regarding this issue, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province has proposed solutions on technical infrastructure and environmental technology; strengthening inspection, supervision and handling of violations; communication, education and promoting the role of the community; increasing financial resources, public investment and socialization in environmental protection work, in which the total investment demand for environmental infrastructure of the whole province in the period of 2025 - 2030 is estimated at 6,500 - 7,000 billion VND... At the same time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province also issued a document guiding localities in implementing treatment plans, selecting service providers, applying service unit prices... for environmental protection work.
