IR4625 sticky rice, round grain sticky rice (also known as 97 sticky rice) is in its peak season, in Duc Linh fields, many farmers harvest sticky rice, traders buy it as soon as they harvest. The price of sticky rice is 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg higher than the price of regular rice, equivalent to 5,600 - 5,800 VND/kg and 7,000 VND/kg, so the households growing sticky rice are very excited...
During the summer-autumn rice harvest, the price of rice has "fallen miserably", with normal rice only selling for 4,800 VND/kg, half as low as the winter-spring crop, so most farmers who grow rice this season only earn their living by labor. Farmer Dang Ngu, in Nghi Duc commune, is renting a combine harvester and said that with the current low rice price, most farmers can only break even, and if anything, they only earn their living by labor... In the context of low rice prices, households growing normal rice are "more sad than happy", but there is a "bright spot" when in the same fields from Hoai Duc, Duc Linh down to Nam Thanh, Dong Kho, Tanh Linh, households growing sticky rice are making a profit. The reason is that the price of sticky rice is still higher than that of normal rice.
Mr. Dang Van Binh, in Hoai Duc commune, is harvesting 15 hectares of sticky rice with two varieties, IR4625 sticky rice and round-grain sticky rice. He said: “I have signed a contract with Cong Thanh Agricultural Cooperative to grow sticky rice for many years now. From the source of seeds to the output, the Cooperative provides and guarantees the purchase price, and the selling price is based on the domestic market, so I am very assured. IR4625 sticky rice is currently selling for 5,600 VND/kg, 97 sticky rice is selling for nearly 7,000 VND/kg. Although the price is not as high as previous crops, compared to growing normal rice, it is still more profitable…”
According to Mr. Binh, making sticky rice is not difficult but it must be produced according to the process to achieve high quality. The cooperative determines the purchase price based on the current status of the harvested sticky rice: 90% ripe sticky rice will be assessed as below the quality required for export, so it has a low price, while 97% ripe sticky rice or more will have a high price and is always encouraged and given incentives by the cooperative with other policies.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Duc Linh Commune said: Not only Duc Linh Commune People's Committee but also other communes in the region have cooperated with Cong Thanh Agricultural Cooperative for many years to organize the implementation of the model of High-quality rice production, round-grain sticky rice and IR 4625, 4626 with an area of several hundred hectares. To increase farmers' income on the fields, the commune has a plan to restructure the agricultural sector, form high-quality rice production areas, sticky rice, and technical processes for intensive cultivation of improved sticky rice adapted to climate change to expand into high-quality rice production areas, sticky rice for the locality. In order to achieve the goal, the commune has invited a number of seed production units, agricultural product purchasing enterprises, and scientists to cooperate in the demonstration model of new rice varieties for farmers to participate in learning. Gradually change farmers' thinking in production through propaganda and mobilization, helping people have a basis to perceive and evaluate the effectiveness. This is a key task in developing the local economy with the main crops being rice and sticky rice.
According to Cong Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, the association of communes in building models and introducing production models applying science and technology is very effective. It helps farmers apply them to production and expand the area in the fields. On the other hand, the cooperative also has agricultural products, especially high-quality sticky rice varieties for export, creating a stable market for farmers. Currently, the fields from Tanh Linh to Hoai Duc have about 300 households growing about 500 hectares of sticky rice of all kinds, with an average yield of 6-7 tons/ha, with some households achieving 8-9 tons/ha, and profits from growing sticky rice reaching 15-30 million VND/ha, depending on the season... According to the plan, the cooperative will expand its area in the coming time.
According to many farmers, growing sticky rice according to the same process as growing high-quality rice, but has the advantage of having the product purchased, making higher profits than growing regular rice, and not being forced to lower prices by traders...
