Thanh Ha Pottery Village - Hoi An

Nam Dieu-Thanh Ha pottery village (Thanh Ha ward, old Quang Nam province) was formed around the 16th and 17th centuries by a number of craftsmen from Thanh Hoa and Nghe An who came to build a village in Thanh Ha, bringing with them the pottery craft. The craft village was most prosperous around the first half of the 19th century, and was recorded by the Nguyen Dynasty in the book Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi, the Quang Nam local products section.

The village has about 320 households, about 1000 residents, of which 105 households, 212 people make pottery. With unique cultural values, a long history that is constantly preserved and promoted, in August 2019, Thanh Ha pottery was included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

This pottery village, which is over 500 years old, still preserves intact the traditional handmade pottery making process along with many folk knowledge values associated with the process of forming the village and developing the commercial port city of Hoi An.

Associated with tangible cultural heritage is a large amount of intangible cultural heritage such as: knowledge of pottery production (traditional and fine arts), earthenware, bricks, tiles, making statues of Tao Quan, lime burning and division of labor and organization of production.

After the merger, the pottery village is now located in Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang city. In the central area of the pottery village, there are currently 10 relics that have been ranked and included in the protection list.
