DTO - From initial skepticism about the new farming technique, the rice fields at the Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative (AAS) (An Long Commune, Tam Nong District, former Dong Thap Province) are gradually "changing their skin". Two successful crops within the framework of the Government's 1 million hectare high-quality, low-emission rice project has not only brought about outstanding economic efficiency but also ignited strong confidence in many farmers. This is a clear demonstration of a sustainable agricultural future, where profit and the environment go hand in hand.

Farmers of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative are excited when the model of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice helps farmers reduce costs and increase profits.

When farmers believe in smart farming

Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative used to be one of the key rice cultivation areas of the old Tam Nong district, and is now striving to become a pioneer in implementing the Government's 1 million hectare high-quality, low-emission rice project. After two challenging but hopeful farming seasons, farmers at Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative have gradually expanded their acreage to the entire seasonal umbrella.

Standing in front of the rice fields in the harvest season, golden and full of grain, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha - a member of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative could not hide his joy and excitement. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha shared: “As soon as I was mobilized, I boldly participated in the entire rice area of my family, which is 1.5 hectares. Initially, implementing the model of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice inevitably had difficulties and confusion. When I started implementing it, I was also worried about having to sow sparsely and reduce the amount of rice seeds. However, after the end of the winter-spring crop, the rice rice yield in the model was not inferior, even higher than the produced outside the model. My family was very excited”.

According to the experience of farmers participating in the 1 million hectare high-quality rice model at Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative, the high-quality rice cultivation process not only optimizes costs but also significantly increases productivity. Farmers carefully prepare the land according to the process, and apply basal fertilizer before sowing. Thanks to that, the amount of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides are all significantly reduced. Specifically, the number of times pesticides are sprayed is reduced from 5 times to 2 times due to fewer pests. The amount of fertilizer is also reduced from 60kg to 40kg. In total, farmers save nearly 500,000 VND per hectare (1,000m²). As a result, the final yield is superior to traditional farming. After the winter-spring crop in 2025, many farmers of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative could not hide their excitement when the profit reached over 3 million VND/hectare. This is an impressive figure, affirming the economic efficiency that the Project brings, completely different from previous traditional farming.

Changing mindset - Towards sustainable agricultural production

One of the important factors contributing to the success of the Project is the change in farmers' production mindset, especially in straw and water management. Farmers at Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative have done a good job of collecting all straw from the fields. This not only contributes to reducing emissions but also creates additional income for farmers through the sale of straw.

With the advantage of a closed cell, the pumping station system is invested synchronously with 2 inlet pumping systems and 3 outlet pumping systems, alternating wet and dry cultivation becomes more convenient than ever. This technique helps the late-season rice plants to always be sturdy, not to fall over in heavy rain conditions, ensuring productivity.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuong - a member of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative, shared about the changes in farmers' awareness at the cooperative: "At first, when farmers heard that the 1 million hectare high-quality rice model was implemented, they were very worried. During the winter-spring harvest, the cooperative's production team had to closely monitor, fearing that farmers would arbitrarily burn straw, but this season, everything has become easier. Farmers clearly understand the benefits of not burning straw and are very cooperative with the cooperative."

To ensure sustainable success, the cooperative regularly coordinates with the local agricultural sector to strengthen training, transfer science and technology, and promote digital transformation applications for members.

Mr. Ngo Hong Son - Head of the Production Team, Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: "In the past, we have regularly trained and transferred scientific and technical advances to farmers. Although the farmers are old, daily training will help them use them better, so that they can cultivate effectively without having to go to the fields but still monitor and observe the development of the fields." This shows the strategic vision of the cooperative in modernizing agriculture.

Mr. Mai Thanh Liem - Director of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative, shared more about the strong spread of the model: "From the initial hesitation of many farmers, after 2 seasons of implementing the model, farmers in the cooperative felt excited and asked to participate in the model of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice. In the winter-spring crop, we deploy 50 hectares, this summer-autumn crop is 50 hectares. It is expected that in the next autumn-winter crop, we will deploy 100 hectares".

Overcoming initial confusion and challenges, farmers of Phu Tho Agricultural Service Cooperative have been working together to build high-quality raw rice fields, with reduced costs and significantly increased competitiveness, attracting the attention of many consuming enterprises. This strong transformation not only affirms the right direction of the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice but also contributes significantly to helping Dong Thap soon successfully implement the goal of sustainable agricultural development, bringing a prosperous and prosperous life to farmers.
