RT reported that in an interview with the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet published on July 7, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has long ceased to be a defense bloc, referring to the bloc's interventions in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya.
"Who were NATO countries defending against there? Who attacked them?", Mr. Lavrov asked.

According to Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, this US-led military bloc has been expanding towards Russia's borders for many years, while seeking to turn Ukraine into a "military springboard" to contain Russia.
"The appearance of NATO bases in Ukraine and their participation in this military alliance will be a direct threat to our national security. We will not be able to accept such a situation," Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed.
In 2021, before the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict (February 2022), Moscow sought to address its concerns by asking the US and NATO for security guarantees, hoping to maintain Ukraine's non-aligned status.
“Our initiative was rejected,” Lavrov said, adding that the West instead continued to “pump weapons into Ukraine to solve the Donbass and Crimea issues by force”.
“In the end, we had no choice but to launch a special military operation. I am sure that any self-respecting country would do the same in such a situation,” Lavrov continued.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed that there can be no lasting solution without addressing the root causes of the conflict, including rejecting Kiev's ambitions to join NATO, ensuring human rights in Ukraine and the international community's recognition of "new territorial realities."
