The way to President Ton Duc Thang Memorial Area
Ancient beauty and tourism potential
From Long Xuyen ward, stepping off the ferry, one can feel the scent of alluvium and the fresh air typical of the West. The name "O Moi Ferry" makes many people curious. Mr. Nguyen Van Manh (residing in My Khanh hamlet, My Hoa Hung commune) interestingly explained: "In the past, right at the beginning of this ferry terminal, there were many decades-old O Moi trees. That's why people used to call it O Moi Ferry". That name, along with the slow ferries taking passengers across the river, has become an indispensable part of the first picture of My Hoa Hung. "The fresh, cool air mixed with the faint scent of alluvium, the lush fruit gardens, the village roads shaded by cool green trees. All of these seem to hold tourists' feet, taking us away from the hustle and bustle of the city to return to a life close to nature" - tourist Tran Ngoc Dep (from Can Tho city) expressed.
The Hau River has been soothing generations of islanders, witnessing the miraculous changes of this land. My Hoa Hung is fortunate to possess a dense system of canals, creating a natural irrigation network. Along with that, fruit gardens, such as: Mango, longan, grapefruit, durian, rambutan... are lush all year round. This is an invaluable resource for developing diverse types of ecotourism. Visitors can participate in the experience of bailing out ditches to catch fish, picking fresh fruit right in the garden, or gently rowing a boat through the winding canals, exploring the wild beauty of the rivers of the West.
"My family has been attached to this land for decades. Now, with the development of eco-tourism, the orchard helps bring income to farmers. Many tourists even ask to stay at homestays to experience the simple life of the orchards," said Nguyen Van Tam, a local resident.
Uncle Ton Memorial Area - The heart of the island
When mentioning My Hoa Hung, people often immediately think of President Ton Duc Thang Memorial Site. This place was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Historical Relic in 1984 and by the Government as a Special National Relic in 2012. Entering the memorial site, a large, spacious space filled with the green of an ancient tree garden appears, bringing a feeling of solemnity, closeness and peace.
The items, such as: Temple, exhibition area, souvenir shop are arranged harmoniously. We were really moved when seeing the historical artifacts with our own eyes. From the plane that carried Uncle Ton to the South to front over the great victory ceremony of the South, unifying the country on May 15, 1975, to the car that Uncle used when going on long business trips, the simple bicycle that Uncle used on short trips, or the Giang Canh train that once took Uncle from Long Xuyen to visit his hometown... Each item tells a story about the simple yet great life of President Ton Duc Thang, an outstanding son of his hometown An Giang.
Ms. Tran Thao Nguyen (teacher, from Ho Chi Minh City) emotionally shared: "I have read a lot about Uncle Ton in books, but coming here, seeing with my own eyes the relics and images of Uncle, I truly feel the simplicity, closeness but also the resilience of a leader. Especially, seeing the bicycle and the Giang Canh boat that Uncle used, I admire his simple lifestyle even more. This is an extremely valuable lesson for the younger generation".
Sharing the same view, Mr. Pham Van Binh (a retired cadre from Khanh Hoa province) said: “I have long cherished the desire to visit Uncle Ton's hometown. The memorial area is very spacious, airy, with many shady trees, creating a very pleasant feeling. The way the artifacts are displayed is also very scientific, helping us clearly visualize the stages in Uncle Ho's life. I am very impressed with the images of Uncle Ho returning to the South after the liberation day, full of emotion and pride.”
Not only the older generation, but also the young people have memorable experiences. Nguyen Thi Mai Chi (3rd year student, Can Tho University) shared: "Before, I only knew Uncle Ton through textbooks. When I came to the memorial area, the teachers explained the story, and saw the artifacts with my own eyes, I found Uncle Ho's life truly admirable. This place helps us understand more clearly about history, about the sacrifices of previous generations to have peace like today".
My Hoa Hung Commune, with the tranquility of the Hau River, the antiquity of hundred-year-old houses and especially the great mark of President Ton Duc Thang, is gradually becoming an attractive destination on the tourist map of the West.
