World gold prices fell $24 to $3,312 an ounce. In just a few hours, the precious metal lost nearly 0.7%. The US has almost reached 90% of the tariff trade agreement with other countries, causing gold to fall sharply.
In addition, gold lost momentum as US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell kept interest rates on hold under pressure from President Donald Trump. President Trump has said that high borrowing costs are holding back economic growth and hurting US competitiveness. Trump's criticism has increased in recent weeks, calling for "emergency monetary easing" and blaming the Fed for slowing growth.
Still, Mr. Powell has publicly pledged to pursue data-driven policy. Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, and the central bank is reluctant to act on political pressure alone — especially when the Fed wants to maintain its independence. But if Mr. Trump’s political will translates into broader economic policy changes or increased pressure from Congress, markets could pivot more quickly.
If Powell holds out against political pressure, traders may have to accept that the Fed will keep rates on hold unless inflation weakens further. Gold could then trade sideways or even fall in the absence of a new dovish theme. Real yields will continue to suck up gold’s gains unless there is a rate cut or new geopolitical risk.
This week, the market is waiting for information that will impact gold prices such as the Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy meeting, the minutes of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in June, and the US's weekly unemployment benefit applications./.
