According to the German automaker, the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant has had to add a third shift to speed up production of the Mercedes-Benz CLA to meet market demand. Currently, about 200 CLAs are produced every day, equivalent to an output of about 50,000 cars/year. Still, the company's Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant can expand its capacity to hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year using the new MMA platform, which will be shared with many other models in the future.
For the first time in the history of the CLA line, Mercedes-Benz offers both a pure electric version and a version using an internal combustion engine. This is considered a factor contributing to the strong appeal of the new generation of CLA. In the pure electric vehicle group, the company launched two main versions: CLA 250+ EQ and CLA 350 4MATIC EQ. Both use an 800V high-voltage platform and an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Providing power for the CLA 250+ EQ version is an electric motor located on the rear axle, producing 272 horsepower and 335 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the CLA 350 4MATIC EQ is equipped with two electric motors and a full-time four-wheel drive system for a capacity of 353 horsepower and a maximum torque of 515 Nm. In addition to the pure electric version, internal combustion engine versions of the CLA will begin production in the next few months.
The CLA variants use a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, but detailed performance specifications have not yet been announced. Mercedes has also confirmed that it will assemble the CLA Shooting Brake variant this year. Mercedes-Benz production chief Jörg Burzer said orders for the new CLA were “very encouraging” and said the production ramp-up was progressing smoothly. However, he acknowledged that the company was facing some supply chain challenges, particularly with regard to rare earth materials from China. Despite the increased production, delivery times may still be extended. Many orders placed since April 2025 will not be delivered until 2026. In light of this, the company plans to temporarily stop accepting internal orders from employees to prioritize serving external customers.
While many car brands are gradually eliminating sedans from their product portfolio to focus on SUVs, Mercedes-Benz shows the opposite direction. With the positive reception for the new generation CLA, especially the pure electric versions, the German carmaker continues to affirm that the sedan segment is still an attractive choice for global consumers.
