Train station entrance plunges into sidewalk in Germany

From afar, the entrance to the subway station looked like an old train had crashed straight into the sidewalk, causing bricks and stones to shatter.

Bockenheimer Warte metro station is located west of Frankfurt city center, famous among tourists for its unique entrance, which looks like a train going straight into the ground. To make the structure look more realistic, it has broken bricks and stones around the back.

The entrance is the work of Polish architect Zbigniew Peter Pininski, who was heavily influenced by the surrealist paintings of Belgian artist René Magritte.

The structure was completed in 1986, along with the B and C levels of the metro station. At the time, locals were concerned about the expansion of the city’s transport network. Any new construction was controversial and often met with opposition. So Pininski decided to design something that would make locals pass by, glance, and smile.

In 2001, the station underwent a renovation and expansion, but the walkway remained the same. Thanks to this unique design, the station and its entrance have become famous among tourists. People who come to Frankfurt often stop by this structure to take souvenir photos.

“If you leave the station, follow the signs to the Senckenberg Museum, and you will come out right at this exit,” suggested Alexander W, a British tourist who visited the famous entrance in 2022, if you are coming from underground. From above ground, the entrance is north of Goethe University.

Kerrygan, a Kenyan travel blogger who visited Frankfurt in March this year, said there are many good eateries around the Bockenheimer Warte station. "This is an area where you can eat everything, from Mexican to Italian to Vietnamese. The nightlife is also very vibrant," she said.
