Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery rose 3 yuan to 3,371 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures traded in a narrow range as traders weighed a stronger outlook for China's steel market against weaker economic data from the world's top consumer.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 settled at 786.5 yuan ($108.54) a tonne, snapping a three-day winning streak.

Benchmark December iron ore SZZFZ4 on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.34% to $103.45 a tonne.

However, benchmark steel prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar SRBcv1 and wire rod SWRcv1 rose about 0.4%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 rose 0.26%, and stainless steel SHSScv1 rose nearly 0.7%.

“The steel sector has shown signs of improvement in recent months. Strong exports and falling inventories have provided support, while steel output continued to rise through November,” ANZ analysts said in a note.

Total losses in China's steel industry fell to 23 billion yuan in January-October from 34 billion yuan in the first nine months of the year, ANZ said.

Improved steel mill profits contributed to the improvement, with the market focused on China's Politburo meeting scheduled for early December and the Central Economic Work Conference in mid-December, said Westpac analysts.

China is both the world’s top consumer and producer of metals. But its industrial profits extended their decline in October, falling 10% from a year earlier, weighed down by deflationary pressures and weak demand in a weakening economy.

New headwinds from higher US tariffs could also threaten China's industrial sector next year, reducing export earnings.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE continued to decline, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coking coal DCJcv1 down 0.84% and 1.79%, respectively.
