Urinary tract infection due to common habits
Ms. T. (42 years old, Hanoi ), was admitted to the emergency room at Hospital E in a state of severe urinary disorder, painful urination, frequent urination, and blood in the urine. Notably, she said that she had recurrent urinary tract infections almost every month but still tried to endure and self-treat.
Directly treating the patient, Dr. Mai Van Luc, Department of Nephrology and Urology Surgery, E Hospital (Hanoi) said: "This patient is a typical case of recurrent urinary tract infections due to common mistakes that many women make."

Urine test results showed 500 bc/µL of leukocytes in urine; 200 hc/µL of red blood cells in urine; positive nitrite (NIT +), indicating urinary tract infection. Obstetric examination noted accompanying vaginitis.
According to Dr. Luc, Ms. T. has a habit of wearing tight pants regularly. This is one of the risk factors that increases the temperature of the private area, keeping it moist, creating a favorable environment for bacteria to grow.
In addition, female patients are lazy to drink water. Insufficient daily water intake makes the urinary tract easily concentrated, bacteria easily adhere and develop.
"Notably, the patient had a habit of buying medicine for self-treatment. The first few times she had mild symptoms of painful urination, she went to the pharmacy to buy antibiotics. After a few days of feeling better, she stopped taking the medicine.

Using the wrong medicine or not taking the right dose will not cure the disease completely, the bacteria will become resistant to the medicine, and it will recur quickly and more severely the next time," said Dr. Luc.
Ms. T. was treated for both cystitis and vaginitis at the same time, combined with antibiotics based on the results of urine culture. The patient was also instructed on drinking water, urination regimen, and how to prevent recurrence.
After a week, she was able to urinate normally, no longer had painful urination, and her mental state was more stable.
Do not be subjective with urinary tract infections
Dr. Luc recommends: “Urinary tract infections are common, especially in the summer. If not treated properly, the disease can easily recur, last for a long time, cause complications and seriously affect the quality of life.”
To prevent, people need to:
- Drink enough water every day: About 0.4l/10kg of body weight, divided evenly throughout the day. Do not drink small sips, should drink 100-200ml each time, 2 hours apart.
- Do not self-diagnose or self-medicate: Many symptoms are similar but have different causes. Self-treatment can cause the disease to relapse or lead to drug resistance.
- See a nephrologist immediately if you have any unusual symptoms. The doctor will perform tests, make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the most appropriate treatment regimen.
- Follow your doctor's instructions 100%. Even if you feel better, you must finish taking the medicine and return for a follow-up appointment on time to ensure that the bacteria are completely destroyed and that the condition is completely gone.
- Proper personal hygiene: Use appropriate cleaning solutions, avoid soaps or irritants.
- Choose cool clothes, not too tight or stuffy.
