Cambodia officially licensed by China to export fresh durian
While the domestic market is quite stable, the export sector received good news from Cambodia. On the evening of July 4, the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture , Forestry and Fisheries announced that China had officially granted the country a license to export fresh durian to the world's most populous market.
The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) has approved the applications of 112 farms and 30 packing houses in Cambodia that meet strict standards on good agricultural practices (GAP), plant quarantine and food safety. Cambodia joining the group of countries allowed to export fresh durian to China (after Thailand and Vietnam) will create new competition in the region, especially in terms of price and quality.
The Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture stressed that in order to maintain and expand the market, farmers and packers must strictly comply with regulations on pesticide residues, prohibited chemicals and plant quarantine requirements. The government also encouraged other entities to apply for licenses if needed to increase export capacity.
Notably, durian is the ninth Cambodian agricultural product allowed to be exported to China, following items such as rice, bananas, mangoes, longans and chili peppers, demonstrating Cambodia's strategy to increase the value of national agricultural products in recent years.
