High pig prices, rainy season diseases make farmers worried
According to Vietnam Livestock Magazine, the price of live pigs remains high, ranging from 70,000 to 73,000 VND/kg. However, the increased cost of inputs such as feed and medicine, along with the complicated developments of the epidemic during the rainy season, has made many farmers cautious in their plans to restore their herds.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tam, a farmer in Can Tho City, said that over the past month, the price of live pigs has not fluctuated much and his family has just sold pigs for 70,000 VND/kg. With this price, he earns a profit of about 2.5 million VND per pig weighing about 100kg.
“Although the price of live pigs remains high, the cost of feed and medicine has increased by about 10%, so the actual profit is only average. Next time we restock, we plan to reduce the number because the price of live pigs tends to stay the same or decrease slightly, plus the rainy season is when diseases are likely to break out,” Mr. Tam shared.
Mr. Le Van Tam, also in Can Tho City, said that in March 2025, he earned nearly 3 million VND in profit per 100kg pig thanks to the sharp increase in live pig prices. However, the profit has now dropped to about 2.2 million VND because the purchase price of live pigs has dropped to 70,000 VND/kg, while the cost of piglets, feed and care services have all increased.
“At the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs peaked at VND78,000/kg, but now it is only VND70,000/kg. If you produce your own piglets, farmers can still make a profit. For me, the high cost has significantly reduced my profits,” Mr. Tam added.
Faced with erratic stormy weather and high risk of disease, Mr. Tam is considering reducing the number of pigs to re-herd and taking advantage of the empty barn time to renovate and clean to prevent disease.
