The current power supply from the national grid for Da Nang city includes 1 500kV transformer station (Da Nang station has a total capacity of 900MVA) and 4 220kV transformer stations with a total capacity of 1,750MVA (including Da Nang, Hoa Khanh, Ngu Hanh Son, Hai Chau stations).
To meet the power supply demand for the city's loads, from 2016 to present, the electricity sector has completed 21 110kV grid projects with a total investment of more than VND 1,768 billion. At the same time, it has completed 272 medium and low voltage grid projects in the 2016-2023 period with a total investment of VND 2,894 billion; and has been implementing 50 categories of medium and low voltage grid projects in the 2024-2025 period with a total investment of VND 434 billion.
Da Nang city's load is supplied from the national grid through 16 110kV transformer stations with a total installed capacity of 1,623MVA, fully meeting the electricity demand in the area in the coming years because the maximum electricity usage capacity at one time during the hot season in 2025 is forecasted to be about 760MW (an increase of 10.9% compared to the maximum capacity in the dry season in 2024).
Along with that, the SAIDI index (average customer power outage time) is very low compared to the whole country, showing that the city's power supply is very safe and continuous, especially the power source and grid system, which is assessed by the electricity industry as being one step ahead.
According to Deputy Director of Da Nang Electricity Company Limited Nguyen Dinh Tuan, among the solutions to ensure safe power supply for the city during this year's hot season, the company has made a list of more than 200 customers equipped with backup diesel generators with a total capacity of about 250MVA, with an estimated available mobilized capacity of 180MVA.
When there is a local power shortage or a problem with the national power system, these backup power sources will be mobilized to supply power on site. The company promotes electricity saving activities, striving to save at least 2% of the total electricity consumption of the whole city.
Nguyen Dinh Phuc, Permanent Vice President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City, acknowledged that in reality, the national power source is still lacking. Meanwhile, in Da Nang City, there is no major power source, only Cau Do (diesel) power plant used as a backup.
The city's greatest potential is solar energy, but the development of rooftop solar power for businesses and residents has only reached a small capacity. Other energy sources such as waste electricity, biomass electricity, etc. are still facing many difficulties. In general, the development of power sources in the city is still limited, requiring electricity users to save, use it reasonably and effectively.
In order to proactively supply safe and continuous electricity to Da Nang city in the future, on March 7, 2025, the City People's Committee issued Official Dispatch No. 1316/UBND-SCT requesting the Ministry of Industry and Trade to supplement the planning of the Da Nang pumped storage hydropower project for implementation in the period 2031-2035 with a capacity of up to 595MW.
In addition, from the city's proposal, in Decision No. 768/QD-TTg dated April 15, 2025 of the Prime Minister on adjusting the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Da Nang was included in the list of potential locations for developing LNG gas thermal power plant projects (using liquefied natural gas as fuel to produce electricity)...
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Quang Nam province (old), there are currently 34 hydroelectric projects and Nong Son thermal power plant (30MW) in operation with a total designed capacity of 1,626MW. In addition, there are more than 1,400 rooftop solar power systems with a total installed capacity of more than 131MW.
The province is supplied with electricity from 19 110kV transformer stations with a total capacity of 1,062MVA (supplied with electricity from 4 220kV transformer stations with a total capacity of 1,250MVA). The maximum daily load capacity in 2024 is nearly 482MW...
In Plan No. 4802/KH-UBND dated June 3, 2025 of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province on implementing the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the province deployed contents to implement the Prime Minister's decision on allocating additional capacity in the area by 2035 for small hydropower plants of 756.3MW; large hydropower plants of 105MW (A Vuong Hydropower Expansion); pumped-storage hydropower plants of 300MW (A Vuong Pumped-storage Hydropower Plant); rooftop solar power of 163MW, concentrated solar power of 50MW; onshore and nearshore wind power of 100MW (TDX Quang Nam 1 Wind Power Project); waste-to-energy power of 50MW, biomass power of 400MW; gas power of 1,500MW (2 factories)...
In particular, the locality promotes the development of the Central Gas Power Center project according to the planning associated with industries using energy and gas products, creating new development momentum in the locality and region.
