Localities take the lead in implementing vaccination against African swine fever
Hai Duong province has become a pioneer in implementing large-scale vaccination against African swine fever (ASF), following the direction of the Prime Minister and the veterinary sector. Since the end of 2024, the province has administered nearly 50,000 doses of vaccine to pigs.
The Hai Duong Department of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine said that after 28 days of vaccination, the authorities took 181 samples from 17 households in 15 communes and the results showed that 100% of the samples achieved a complete protection rate. The pigs after vaccination were in good health, developed normally and were sold.
Mr. Hoat shared Hai Duong's experience in injecting ASF vaccine that, when implementing vaccination, the Department coordinated with the province to organize training for grassroots veterinary staff, especially commune veterinary staff, to equip them with sufficient knowledge to guide people to properly follow the vaccination process.
In addition, before vaccination, it is necessary to focus on improving the resistance of the pig herd through a reasonable nutritional regimen. Vaccination must be done on the right subjects and at the right time, because the vaccine is currently only recommended for pigs over 4 weeks old. Incorrect vaccination or incorrect procedures can pose risks to farmers.
During the vaccination process, it is necessary to closely monitor the health status of the pigs and promptly handle any unusual reactions. After vaccination, it takes more than 20 days for immunity to fully form; this is a sensitive period. If biosecurity measures are not maintained, the risk of disease outbreaks can still occur.
