Average 6 months, CPI nationwide increased by 3.27%

The average consumer price index (CPI) in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 3.31% compared to the second quarter of 2024. The average CPI in the first 6 months of 2025 increased by 3.27% compared to the same period last year.

According to the announcement of the General Statistics Office on the morning of July 5, the CPI in June 2025 increased by 0.48% compared to the previous month, mainly due to the unusually high price of housing maintenance materials, especially sand, stone, and bricks, along with the increase in gasoline and oil prices following world fuel prices.

In the 0.48% increase in CPI in June 2025 compared to the previous month, there were 10 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes, including: The transportation group increased the most with 1.66% (impacting the general CPI increase by 0.16 percentage points); the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group increased by 1.42% (impacting the general CPI increase by 0.27 percentage points); the culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.27%; the beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.20% due to increased production costs and consumer demand during the hot season.

The group of household equipment and appliances increased by 0.13%; the group of garments, hats, and footwear increased by 0.10%; the group of other goods and services increased by 0.09%; the group of food and catering services increased by 0.06%; the group of medicines and medical services increased by 0.02% due to the increased cost of importing pharmaceutical materials when the exchange rate increased; theeducation group increased slightly by 0.01%.

The post and telecommunications group alone decreased by 0.02%.

The average CPI in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 3.31% over the same period last year. Of which, medicine and medical services increased by 13.35%; other goods and services increased by 6.57%; housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials increased by 6.35%; food and catering services increased by 3.60%; education increased by 2.95%; beverages and tobacco increased by 2.08%; culture, entertainment and tourism increased by 1.98%; household appliances and equipment increased by 1.63%; clothing, hats and footwear increased by 1.19%.

Post and telecommunications decreased by 0.31%; transportation decreased by 4.83%.

Average CPI in the first 6 months of 2025 increased by 3.27% compared to the same period in 2024.

The General Statistics Office said that the CPI in the first 6 months of this year increased compared to the same period last year due to the price index of food and catering services increasing by 3.69%, causing the overall CPI to increase by 1.24 percentage points. Of which, the price index of pork increased by 12.75% due to limited supply while consumer demand increased during holidays and Tet, causing the overall CPI to increase by 0.43 percentage points. Meanwhile, the food price index also increased by 4.15%.

In addition, the price index of the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group increased by 5.73%, causing the overall CPI to increase by 1.08 percentage points due to the increase in rental housing prices and prices of housing maintenance materials. Of which, the price index of the household electricity group increased by 5.51% due to increased electricity demand along with EVN adjusting the average retail electricity price on October 11, 2024 and May 10, 2025, causing the overall CPI to increase by 0.18 percentage points.

The price index of the group of drugs and medical services increased by 13.87%, causing the general CPI to increase by 0.75 percentage points due to the adjustment of medical service prices...

Meanwhile, the factor contributing to restraining the CPI growth rate in the past 6 months was the price index of the transportation group decreased by 3.63%, contributing to a decrease in the overall CPI of 0.35 percentage points, in which gasoline prices decreased by 12.56%; the price index of the post and telecommunications group decreased by 0.45%, affecting a decrease in the overall CPI of 0.01 percentage points, due to a decrease in the price of old-generation phones.

Core inflation in June 2025 increased by 0.31% over the previous month and by 3.46% over the same period last year.

On average, in the first 6 months of 2025, core inflation increased by 3.16% over the same period last year, lower than the 3.27% increase in the average CPI, mainly due to the prices of food, foodstuffs, electricity, and medical services, which are factors that increase the CPI but are excluded from the list of core inflation calculations.

Domestic gold price index in June 2025 decreased by 1.27% compared to May 2025; increased by 48.01% compared to the same period last year; increased by 33.54% compared to December 2024.

On average in the second quarter of 2025, gold prices increased by 43.62% over the same period last year; on average in the first 6 months of 2025, the gold price index increased by 37.4%.

The domestic US dollar price fluctuates in the opposite direction to the world price. The US dollar price index in June 2025 increased by 0.32% compared to the previous month due to increased demand for foreign currency for import payments; increased by 3.06% compared to the same period last year; increased by 2.92% compared to December 2024; the average in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 2.98%; the average in the first 6 months of 2025 increased by 3.3%.
