Coming to Xeo Ro hamlet, An Bien commune, asking for Mr. Do Ngoc Son, almost everyone knows him, because he is always willing to help difficult circumstances in the area. Born into a farming family, spending his whole life working on the fields, Mr. Son not only works in the fields, but also has a talent for carpentry. Previously, he lived by carpentry combined with farming to increase his income. After many years of hard work, Mr. Son's family life gradually stabilized, from which he devoted more effort to charity work. Initially, when funds were limited, he cut down eucalyptus trees on his land, mobilized corrugated iron to build houses for families with dilapidated houses that could not be repaired. Every year, he builds about 15 wooden houses for the poor and those in difficult housing situations. “At first, this work was not known to many people, so the budget was limited and the number of participants was small. However, each house built conveyed a heart of sharing, helping many people overcome difficulties. More and more people joined hands and contributed money to build houses for the poor,” Mr. Son shared.
Until now, Mrs. Tran Thi Su, living in Tay Yen commune, still cannot believe that her family will one day live in a spacious house. Mrs. Su shared: “5 years ago, my husband left, leaving behind 3 young children who were still growing up. I worked many jobs to earn money to raise my children, and I did not even have enough food, let alone to repair the house. Thanks to Uncle Son and the benefactors who supported us in building the house, my children and I are very happy.”
Each family that received support to build a house has the same situation, despite working hard, poverty still clings to them. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nuong, residing in Tay Yen commune, has no land for production. For more than 2 years, Ms. Nuong has been staying at her younger brother's house. Understanding her difficult situation, Mr. Son mobilized benefactors to support her in building a house worth 50 million VND. Ms. Nuong was moved: "I am very happy to receive support from Mr. Son and benefactors to build a house. In my dreams, I never thought I would have a decent house to live in. I am grateful to Mr. Son and the benefactors. Now that I have a decent house, I will try to do business and rise up."
To facilitate the construction of houses of love, Mr. Son established a volunteer group called “Loved Home” consisting of a house construction team and a rural bridge construction team. According to Mr. Son, most of the poor households have been verified and introduced by the local authorities. After that, the group went to the place to learn about and record the situation before building. The group’s operating expenses are public and transparent so that benefactors can easily monitor. Thanks to that, the group has received trust and enthusiastic support from the community.
Talking to Mr. Son, I never heard him complain or worry about himself. For him, building houses for the poor is a fate. While he is still healthy and steady, he wants to build more homes so that the poor have the opportunity to “settle down and have a happy life”.
Over the past 14 years, Mr. Do Ngoc Son has spent his own money and mobilized to build over 450 houses for poor households and households in difficult circumstances; built over 20 rural traffic bridges and a zero-dong clothing store for people in difficult circumstances in the area. |
