Dynamic development of cooperative economy
Coming to Thong Nhat village, Truong Ninh commune today, one can clearly see the new agricultural “picture” following the modernization trend. Across the village’s fields, instead of the small, fragmented fields with tangled borders like before, there are images of “stork-like” fields. The muddy intra-field roads in the rainy season have been upgraded, and agricultural machinery has reached the edges of the fields.
For many years, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thong Nhat Cooperative Nguyen Duy Vien has "steered" the cooperative to become a bright spot in changing farmers' production thinking.
In 1998, Mr. Vien was entrusted with the responsibility of being the head of Thong Nhat Cooperative. “In the first years of taking on the role of head, the Cooperative encountered many difficulties in terms of capital, plus limited professional expertise. Along with that, the people's habit of small-scale, fragmented production, where everyone does their own thing, cannot be easily changed in a day or two. Therefore, the first thing I did, together with the Cooperative's Board of Directors, was to outline specific plans, prioritizing the application of scientific and technological advances into production,” Mr. Vien shared.
Thong Nhat village has 10 hectares of fertile land, 4 hectares of aquaculture land and 250 hectares of rice land. The cooperative has 340 members with a 2-crop rice production area of 250 hectares. In production, the cooperative covers all important service stages, including: Rice planting, seedling propagation and care, crop and livestock services, post-harvest services, inland aquaculture, construction of public works, other civil engineering works, road freight transport and environmental sanitation...
According to Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thong Nhat Cooperative Nguyen Duy Vien, in addition to organizing training and transferring techniques, the Cooperative provides 100% new high-yield, high-quality rice varieties to its members. The Cooperative implements a demonstration model with strict technical processes, thus bringing superior value compared to traditional rice varieties.
To stabilize the material situation and create conditions for people to feel secure in production, the Cooperative has purchased hundreds of tons of fertilizers directly from Song Gianh Corporation and several other companies and sold them directly to member households at lower prices than other places. The Cooperative also supports households in difficult circumstances to receive fertilizers for production.
As the head of the cooperative, Mr. Vien is always concerned with his work, finding solutions to overcome difficulties, proactively promoting internal strength through many practical actions, such as: Mobilizing members to apply SRI improved rice production, organizing production in the direction of linkage and product consumption... To achieve high productivity and quality in the crop, the cooperative guides members to strictly follow the crop schedule, put high-quality seeds into production; sow in the same area, same seeds, creating favorable conditions for care and harvesting.
| Nearly 30 years of operation, under the flexible management and close supervision of Mr. Nguyen Duy Vien, Thong Nhat Cooperative has achieved outstanding successes, being considered one of the top agricultural cooperatives in the province, especially in terms of service provision, improving product quality, increasing profit value and income for farmers... The total revenue of the cooperative in 2024 is over 3.7 billion VND, pre-tax profit is 278 million VND. |
Journey to build a brand
Mentioning Thong Nhat Cooperative means immediately thinking of a cooperative that is always in the top of the province in terms of high productivity and is also one of the leading units in implementing large fields associated with production chains.
According to Mr. Vien, the large field model helps farmers reduce production costs. When planning into concentrated areas, households all sow the same type of seeds, thus limiting pests and diseases. People always comply with the management and care schedule of the cooperative, such as: Using fertilizers, preventing pests and diseases, regulating irrigation water into the fields.
Everything is done simultaneously, so it is very convenient, productivity and quality are both increased. The difference between the large field model and previous rice production models is that in addition to technical innovation in planting, people also apply mechanization in all stages of land preparation, harvesting, preservation and product consumption.

With the goal of increasing productivity and quality of agricultural products, helping people improve their farming skills, boldly applying science and technology; contributing to protecting the health of producers and consumers, the Cooperative has produced high-quality rice according to VietGAP standards associated with linking production and product consumption.
In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the Cooperative has cooperated with Thanh Dat Agriculture and Construction Joint Stock Company to produce quality rice variety DS1 according to the value chain on an area of over 15 hectares with an output of over 100 tons; cooperated with Quang Binh Agricultural Corporation Joint Stock Company to produce DV108 rice on an area of 30 hectares, with an output of over 200 tons.
As a leader, Mr. Vien has always proactively linked with companies that provide quality seeds to cooperative members. In 2024, the cooperative cooperated with Quang Binh Seed Company Limited and Central Seed Group Joint Stock Company to provide over 28 tons of rice seeds to people. Thanks to the introduction of high-quality rice seeds into production, the application of VietGAP processes and production according to the large-field value chain, income increased by 5-8% per unit area.
In particular, the Cooperative has applied high technology to production, spraying herbicides, and preventing pests with drones, helping farmers save labor and costs in agricultural production. Thanks to that, the Cooperative's rice acreage always achieves high productivity, with the winter-spring crop reaching 76 quintals/ha and the summer-autumn crop reaching 66 quintals/ha. Rice output in 2024 will reach 3,512 tons, an increase of 428 tons compared to 2023.
