Coach Enzo Maresca has raised the bar for Chelsea. |
But as soon as the fireworks and praise have subsided, a more important question has been raised: Are Chelsea capable of conquering the Premier League - a title they have not touched since 2017?
The answer lies not only in the trophies won, but in the growing collective under Enzo Maresca.
A different Chelsea
The victory over PSG, the strongest team in Europe at the moment, not only brought world glory to Chelsea, but also sent a message. The Blues have truly transformed. They are no longer the directionless team of previous seasons, where money was poured in but results were lacking.
After three years of buying and rebuilding, Chelsea are back to their old selves. Cole Palmer is the face of the new generation - a player who is not only talented, but also knows how to shine at the right moment. He scored two goals and assisted another in the Club World Cup final, making the big game his own.
Alongside Palmer is João Pedro - a summer signing who is seen as the perfect link-up piece for the front line. The pair form a potent partnership, with a natural connection, technical ability and a keen tactical mind. Even when Pedro left the pitch, his replacement, Liam Delap, played with energy, showing the attacking depth that Chelsea had been lacking.
Chelsea had a convincing victory over PSG in the FIFA Club World Cup final. |
But the biggest difference at Chelsea right now is not in the names, but on the coaching bench. Enzo Maresca was sceptical when he took over the team, but with each game - especially in the Club World Cup - he showed himself to be a real strategist.
Maresca did not follow a template. Against PSG, he adjusted his formation, moving Reece James into the middle alongside Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez to create balance in front of the famous midfield of his opponents. It was a key tactical decision - not only to stop PSG but also to help Chelsea dominate the game.
Maresca once compared football to a game of chess. If so, he would checkmate a famous coach like Luis Enrique. And once he defeats Enrique, Maresca can completely compete with other top names in the Premier League such as Pep Guardiola, Arne Slot or Mikel Arteta.
Titles are not enough - Premier League is the measure
Under their new owners, Chelsea spent over £1 billion rebuilding the squad, winning almost every trophy imaginable: the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, European Super Cup and both the old and new Club World Cups.
However, the Premier League is still the missing piece - and also the title that the Blues fans crave the most. For them, the English title is not just a trophy, but a declaration of return, a mark that proves Chelsea is still a real force domestically - where the fierceness is even greater than the continental arena.
Cole Palmer is the new Chelsea icon. |
Chairman Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Group certainly see the World Cup as a stepping stone to a global brand. But for fans, only when the Premier League trophy returns to Stamford Bridge can Chelsea truly say: “We’re back where we belong.”
There are still areas for improvement, particularly in defence. But looking at how Chelsea held up against PSG's pressure, there is reason to be optimistic. Robert Sanchez was solid in goal, the defence kept their distance, and the Caicedo-Fernandez midfield worked like a machine.
With an attacking line in form, a coach who knows how to turn things around and a young squad that is reaching maturity, Chelsea possesses all the elements to return to the Premier League championship race.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City have certainly seen the warning coming from America. And if they can maintain stability - something Chelsea have lacked for many seasons - they could reclaim the English throne.
The Club World Cup is the last trophy in the collection, but perhaps also the milestone marking the beginning of a completely new Chelsea - more pragmatic, more mature and more ambitious. From the top of the world, Chelsea will now embark on a journey to conquer the next peak: the Premier League. And this time, they seem ready.
