Lesson 1: Breakthrough Development

Lesson 2: Enhance value

In the context of climate change, environmental pollution and increasing demands from domestic and foreign markets, waste treatment in livestock farming has become a mandatory criterion for sustainable development. Therefore, Tien Giang province has clearly identified this problem and taken systematic steps from the beginning.

WASTE PLANNING AND TREATMENT

According to the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, waste treatment in livestock farming is identified as an important issue for the sustainable development of the livestock industry. Therefore, since 2003, the Agriculture sector has participated in the Biogas Development Project (Netherlands), the QSEAP Project, and the Low Carbon Agriculture Support Project (DA LCASP).

Thanks to that, up to now, nearly 12,000 biogas plants have been built, helping livestock households utilize waste to create clean energy for daily life and production, minimizing environmental pollution and saving costs.

In addition, medium and large-scale farms are also guided to build bio-compost tanks to produce organic fertilizer, both reducing waste to the environment and creating additional economic value from livestock by-products. For small facilities and households, the livestock industry encourages the application of simple but effective solutions such as: Raising livestock on ecological bedding, composting with EM biological products, and treating manure with black soldier fly larvae. These solutions are not only suitable for the economic conditions of households, but also ensure bio-safety conditions, minimizing the spread of pathogens and odors to the surrounding environment.

In addition, one of the important strategies to help Tien Giang develop a sustainable livestock industry is to plan and reorganize production into concentrated, specialized and controlled areas.

In addition, based on the 2018 Law on Animal Husbandry and guiding decrees, the province has issued many policies, including Resolution 30/2020 dated December 10, 2020 of the Provincial People's Council clearly stating: Animal husbandry is not allowed in the inner city areas of cities, towns, townships, and residential areas to avoid spreading diseases and environmental pollution.

At the same time, the province has also implemented the policy of planning and building a 200-hectare concentrated livestock farming area in Thanh Hoa commune, Tan Phuoc district. The concentrated livestock farming area in Thanh Hoa commune is being formed and attracting investment; oriented to develop livestock farming models according to VietGAP standards, applying high technology, ensuring food safety and being environmentally friendly.

Livestock zoning not only facilitates state management, but also helps improve product quality, attract investment and effectively control diseases in the area.

SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT

To develop the livestock industry comprehensively, effectively and sustainably, in addition to applying advanced science and technology to livestock farming, the industry also focuses on disease prevention and control with the motto: Proactive - effective - safe.

According to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, in the process of developing the industry, Tien Giang has faced many serious epidemics that caused great losses. These include: Avian influenza occurred from late 2003 to early 2004, causing losses of more than 329 billion VND; blue ear disease in pigs in 2010, destroying nearly 2,900 tons of pigs; African swine fever in 2019, affecting 6,099 households, destroying nearly 10,000 tons of pigs; lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows in 2021, destroying more than 3.7 tons of livestock...

However, thanks to the drastic and timely direction of the Provincial People's Committee, together with the participation of the Veterinary Department and local authorities, the work of disease prevention and control has had remarkable changes. Up to now, the province has achieved outstanding results such as: The vaccination rate for livestock and poultry has remained stable at over 75% of the total herd; all outbreaks have been detected early and handled promptly, with no widespread outbreaks; there have been no cases of rabies in humans or dogs since 2018.

In particular, Tien Giang is also one of the pioneering localities in applying rapid testing techniques to detect and promptly treat sick pigs. At the same time, the province organizes extensive training to hamlets, helping people master disease prevention knowledge and choose appropriate vaccines based on the results of annual pathogen monitoring.

At the same time, the control of animal transportation and quarantine is strictly implemented. The livestock industry also closely coordinates with the health sector in preventing diseases transmitted from animals to humans, providing free disinfectants to high-risk areas.

From preventing epidemics using folk experience, up to now, Tien Giang has combined the application of information technology, managing livestock with software, and tracing the origin of products, helping to control epidemics effectively and quickly.

In addition, the relevant authorities have also stepped up propaganda work to raise public awareness of: the harmful effects of epidemics and antibiotic abuse; the importance of barn hygiene and biosecurity; and the effectiveness of safe livestock farming, following the chain. These positive changes have spread to each livestock farming household, thereby creating a responsible production community, ready to innovate and adapt to the requirements of sustainable development in the new period.

With the foundation achieved, the livestock industry of Tien Giang province continues to set the goal of developing in the direction of environmental sustainability, economic efficiency, disease safety, international integration, application of science - technology and digital transformation in livestock management, environment and supply chain. Comrade Ho Huynh Mai, Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Tien Giang province said:

“In the coming time, in order for the province’s livestock industry to continue to develop, the industry will create favorable conditions for organizations and individuals to access the province’s preferential policies in the livestock sector; replicate effective livestock models from the results of the province’s science and technology projects. Especially, waste treatment in livestock farming must comply with regulations.

The industry promotes the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances in animal husbandry; applies information technology in livestock management and animal disease prevention and control. At the same time, builds and registers brands in the form of trademark certification or geographical indications, applies traceability of products for black chickens, bantam chickens and chicken farming products; implements the annual livestock disease prevention plan approved by the Provincial People's Committee in the most effective way.

The development of Tien Giang livestock industry over the past 50 years is not only a story of increasing herds or output, but also a comprehensive change in thinking, working methods and direction. With a development orientation closely linked to environmental protection and disease control, in the new period, the industry continues to firmly become one of the pioneers in building a modern, safe, green - clean - sustainable livestock industry and ready for international integration.
