Officers of Ha Tien International Border Gate Border Guard Station give funds to support people in especially difficult circumstances.
Warm military-civilian relationship
Each visit strengthens the military-civilian relationship between the border guards and the people in the border area. Mrs. Thi Uc (82 years old, residing in Quarter 3, Ha Tien Ward) lives alone, has no husband, children, or income, and always welcomes the soldiers as her own children.
Although she is no longer lucid, she still remembers the “soldiers” who often visit, chat with her and help clean the house. Mrs. Uc emotionally shared: “I am very happy when the children come. With money, I can buy some rice and some bread to eat. More importantly, having someone to talk to warms my heart.”
As one of the 11 elderly people supported by the Ha Tien International Border Gate Border Guard Station, Mr. Danh Thong (71 years old, residing in To Chau ward) shared: “Thanks to the monthly support from the soldiers, I have money to buy rice and medicine. When I am sick, they come to visit me. I am very grateful. I hope this model will continue to develop so that more lonely elderly people like me can share some of their difficulties.”
Love fulcrum
Ha Tien is a key border area of the province, with more than 14km of land border and more than 21km of coastline. There are many Khmer people living here. A part of the population still faces many difficulties, especially the elderly who are alone, have no relatives, and are not able to work.
Based on that reality, the Border Guard Station of Ha Tien International Border Gate has coordinated with the local Association of the Elderly to deploy the model "Receiving support for the elderly in difficult circumstances, phase 2023 - 2028", officially launched on November 14, 2023.
Accordingly, the unit receives regular support for 11 elderly people in especially difficult circumstances, each person receiving 400,000 VND/month. The support fund is drawn from the production increase fund and voluntary contributions of officers and soldiers in the unit.
Major La Minh Nhoa, Deputy Political Commissar of the Ha Tien International Border Guard Station, said: “We consider this not only a responsibility, but also a sentiment and a morality. Besides the task of protecting the border, officers and soldiers always try to share and accompany people to overcome difficulties.”
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tan Duong, Head of the Ha Tien International Border Gate Border Guard Station, affirmed that the model not only brings material value, but also contributes to multiplying traditional moral values: Respecting the elderly, loving and caring for each other.
"We hope that in the coming time, the model will continue to be deployed in communes and wards after the merger and spread more widely so that more and more elderly people in difficult circumstances will receive care and support," said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tan Duong.
Following the officers and soldiers of the Ha Tien International Border Gate Border Guard Station to visit the elderly, we understand more clearly that each meeting, each warm handshake of the border guards not only brings a small gift, but also conveys a profound humane message: At the remote border, human love is always present, persistent, sincere and full of love.
